When he bought the farm in 1950, it was primarily a dairy operation. The President and Mrs. Eisenhower plan to make this their first real home since their marriage when he retires earlv next year. (UPI Telephoto) will be no inspection of the house now or ever." Since that time only invited guests have entered the at tractive white brick and field stone home with 14 rooms and eight baths. It is Congestion Noted At Intersection Public Works Director Ver non Thorpe has proposed that motorists in the downtown Medford area refrain from turning right at the intersec tion of Main st. and Central ave., in order to avoid consid erable traffic 'congestion- at that intersection. Thorpe suggests instead that motorists who want to get from Central ave., to west Medford turn right at Fourth si.! and proceed west to Grape St., before joining the Main st. traffic. The Central ave.-Main st. intersection has a designated right turn lane, Thorpe points out, and adds that it will still be legal to make right turns at the intersection. However Thorpe says "we anticipate an unusually large vehicle load (at the intersection) and it will save everybody time if motorists 'will by-pass it." If motorists so choose, he said, they can proceed through the Central ave.-Main inter section and then turn right at the next westbound through street which is 11th st. The unusual amount of con gestion at the Central ave. Main st. intersection is only temporary and traffic will probably revert to normal after the Christmas rush is over, according to Thorpe. only from' Eisenhowers friends and other sources that the public has gotten any idea of the interior of the 100-year-old house. The farm was bought in 1950 from Allen S. Redding for $24,000. The Eisenhowers immediately began renovat ing the main house and ac quiring more land. The chang es to the house, which took until 1955 to complete, cost at least $150,000. Perhaps the most famous room is a glasscd-in sunporch overlooking part of the Get tysburg Civil War battlefield. Many of the world's great -Khrushchev, Churchill, Neh- Adcnauer and Lord Mont gomery - have sat there and chatted with Eisenhower. One of the attractions of the house is a white marble mantel in the living room. It was originally installed in the White House in 1854, re moved during the administra tion of Chester Arthur, locat ed by a second-hand dealer a few years ago and presented to the Eisenhowers on their 38th wedding anniversary by the White House staff. The farm alsp has a white clapboard feeding barn, a smaller breeding barn and a guest house.
