Gold Hill School Christmas Program Gold Hill-Pupils of Patrick Elementary school of District ! 6 in Gold Hill will present a ' Christmas program in the new ! multi-purpose room, Tuesday, I Pec. 20 at 1:45 p.m. First graders will sing two songs, "The Christmas Cup board" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." A cantata entitled "The Story of Christmas" by Dale Asher Jacobus will be pre sented by second and third grades. The fourth and fifth grades chorus of Patrick school will sing several Christmas songs. Marvin Throne, vocal music and band instructor of the Gold Hill schools, will direct. The chorus line was made up of male PTA members. They were featured doing a can-can number. An estimated 550 people attended the event. Christmas Decorating And Lighting Contest Talent - The Talent Lions club i sponsoring an out side Christmas lighting and decorating contest in the Talent area. Judging will be Dec. 23. Persons wishing to enter the contest must notify the Lions no later than Dec. 20. First prise will be $10, second $5 and third $2.50. Those wishing to enter Vould call W. M. This is the first time an outside lighting and dec orating contest has been held in Talent. Young People Holding Progressive Dinner , ;': Murphy The King's Teens, young people's group of the Murphy chapel, are ushering in the Christmas season with a progressive dinner to be held tonight starting at 7 p.m. The group will start with the soup course at the home of Mrs. Rudy Twete of Wash ington blvd., Grants Pass. They will' then proceed to Mrs. Clarence Rosa's home in Murphy where the salad will be served, Mis. John While will serve the main course and then the young people will return to the fireplace room of the chapel where dessert will be served and games played for the remaind er of the evening. N. According to Jumes Tristan, music director of the schools, Christmas is for giving and in this way the students tak ing part, give the free concert annually to the people and merchants of the area who have supported his depart ment so generously. Under the direction of Tris tan approximately 100 ele mentary and high school stu dents took part in the cntcr tainmcnl. The 34-picce high school band started the pro gram with four new arrange ments of Christinas music. The Glee club followed the band with 32 girls singing some of the newer Christmas songs. A 34-volce mixed cho rus from the elementary school sang some uhusual songs of the season. Spirit of Christmas Is Revived in Happy Camp Debbie Meinert and Shirley Swearingcn played piano so los. Two Utile girls from the Horse Creek Elementary school, Phyllis and Janet Charity, sang a duet. A combo made up of Peter Swearingcn, Lanny Nevens, Rosanna Poller, Virginia Harndcn, Diane Wcstby, El liott Steele, and Trislan play ed a Christmas . medley of songs. The high school glee club and the band returned to close the program with the better known Christmas carols, join ing together for the first time, singing and playing Christmas Fantasy. The stage was decorated with a model Santa Claus rid ing a sleigh with Rudolf lead ing the reindeer across the set. A huge parachute was hung over the slage lo cover the overhead lights and was decorated to resemble clouds In the sky. Lights on for Education Panel Named in Murphy ivitirpiiy ocicuuun ul inu panel to be featured in the "Lights on for Education" meeting, Jan. 5, at Murphy school .was completed at an afternoon meeting Thursday, Dec. 15 at the school. Mrs. Carl Hayncs, chairman of the program, announced that the panel will consist of William Gilmorc, county school board chairman, who i will speak on matters among proposed legislation pertain ing to school finances, author ity of school boards and the like; Dave Branson, Murphy school principal, whose topic will be school standards; War ren Cook, of the District 7 school office, who will discuss school administration, educa tion for the exceptional child, and Saturday schools; Capt. John Smith of the Grants Pass city police department, who will speak on safety measures to come before the legislature, particularly those affecting school busses; "Musty" Snider, on the stuff of Grants Pass Daily Courier, whose subject will be the proposed measures on regulating obscene liter ature, and Mrs. R. J. Mille maim, legislative chairman of the Murphy PTA, who will report on the recommenda tions of the governor's confer ence on youth and education which have been incorporated in the legislative measures to be discussed. Moderator for the discus sion will be Mrs. Phyllis Michaels, eighth grade teach er at Murphy. The meeting, part of a state-wide campaign to focus attention on pending legislation affecting schools, will start at 7:30 p.m. Thurs day, Jan. 5, and will be pre ceded by a "short" PTA busi ness meeting which will make it possible to skip January's regular PTA meeting night. Butte Falls PTA Plans Projects Bulte Falls-The Butte Falls Parent - Teacher association met Dec. 12 at the Butte Falls High school gym. A short business meeting was held and the association voted lo pass several motions. First decision was to have the Jan. 5 Lights on for Ed- uaclion program be the Jan uary meeting of the association. Second motion passed was to pay $10 for the purchase of Christmas candy to be giv en out by Santa Claus at the Christmas program. The Butte Falls Lions club also is par ticipating in this project. The association voted to have as their first major mon ey making project of the year a basketball game scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the high school gym. The pre liminary game will be be tween the grade school boys, the second game will be be tween high school boys and their fathers. A food conces sion booth will be in opera tion and possibly a cake auc tion will follow both games. Refreshments were served by the sixth and seventh grade room mothers, . School Board Sets Election for April Happy Camp - The Happy Camp elementary school board met Dec. 14 and signed a notice for the school elec tion to be held in April, 1961. The terms of Robert Has kell, Roy Curtis, and Hugh' Wright will expire June 30, 1961. Haskell and Curtis were elected at a special recall election in June to replace Fred Kline and Leon Higley, respectively, whose terms were to expire in 1961. The other two board members, Ha zel Davis and William Sim mons, have until 1962 before their terms expire. ' The board also voted to have' Wright, clerk of the board, send a letter of grati tude to eight grade teacher T. A. Reed for his efforts in starting a radio communica tions class in a small vacant building on the school grounds after school Is dis missed. His class is made up of students qualifying from the upper grades. The class plans lo build their own sets and will broadcast and receive after they have passed their ham operators tests. - Happy Camp May Get Additional TV Happy Camp Siskiyou Video, Yreka, was in Happy Camp Dec. 16 repairing the television cable entering the community. According to em ployees of the company, amp lifiers were rechecked and tubes replaced. According to Bill Magannis and his employees, they plan to bring In Channel 6 from Eureka which is an NBC sta tion as soon as weather per mits equipment to be installed at the present antenna site.., One employee said a picture had been received from the station at the same location as the present antenna for the only station available here, Channel 3, also from Eureka. Channel 6 boosted its power Dec. 15 to reach fringe areas which it has not been able to serve. This channel is a sister station of Channel 7 in Red ding both being owned by Carl McConnel. Santa Claus Welcomed By Hornbrook Children Hornbrook Santa Claus made his first appearance of the 1960 season in Hornbrook Thursday evening at the schoolhouse at the close of the school program. He was a busy man as he handed out 160 bags of candy and fruit to the grammar school children and their pre school age brothers and sis ters. Apples and oranges for the sacks were donated to the school by the Morrison-Knut-sen Construction Co., contrac tors on Copco's Iron - Gate Eagle - Point The ladies physical education group that meets on Wednesday night will not meet , this week or next week. They will resume their class Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the music room instead of the gymnasium of the Eagle Point Grade school dam project on the Klamath river. The Christmas program was divided into four parts, with each of the four rooms pre senting a skit appropriate to the season. Miss Phyllis Bird's first and second graders, dressed in white choir robes with huge red bows at their chins, presented "A Story of Christmas in Song," featuring a tableau of the Manger scene with Sharon Shinar as Mary, Grant Burket as Joseph, Eddy Sanders and Mike Slavcns as the shepherds. Bill Oickison, Jimmy Clyburn and Kenny Fisher were the three wise men. Jimmy Lynn Liskey por trayed a pint-sized Santa Claus. "The Christmas Story" in song and verse was given by Mrs. Ruth Cummins' third and fourth graders, while Ronald Rhodes' fifth and sivrh erade classes enacicu the classic poem "Twas the Night Before Christmas" with Elaine Eckert and Linda Greene as narrators, and Pen ny Farnsworth and Steve Eck ert as "Ma and Pa." "Some Well-Known Christmas Car ols" by "The Carolers" com posed of Harley Baker's en tire seventh and eighth grade classes concluded the pro gram. . Linda and Lydia Greene provided the piano accompan iment for the program, and also played a piano duet. En rollment at the Hornbrook school is at an all-time high of 114 students, 18 above any previous year in the nearly 90 year history of the school. "The Meaning of Christmas" is the theme selected and this will take the place of the regular December Parent-Teacher as sociation meeting. All parents and members of the commu nity are invited to attend. The grade school will have their room Christmas parties on Friday and school will close until the 3rd of Janu ary for the holidays.
