ALVA GRAHAM Tak.i Lav of Abience County Churches Slate Programs 1 Numerous county churches have scheduled Christmas pro grams today. Applegate church will hold its program at 8 o clock. The choir under direction of Miss Georgia Weidman of the Eagle Point Community church will present a Christ mas cantata tonight . at . 7:30 0 clock; ' Soloists ' will ' be Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Hortori and Mrs. Robert Walch. Jim Arthur will be organist and Mrs. Raymond Chamberlain, pianist. Jim Clark will give a choral read ing. The Phoenix Church of the Nazarene, Third and Pine sts., will present their Christmas program at 7 o'clock at the church. Mrs. E. C. Foccman will be in charge. The Trail Community church will present the Christ mas program and play en titled "The Gates of Christ mas" starting at 7:30 o'clock. Both adults and children will ba included in the cast. Murphy Home Is Destroyed by Fire . Murphy - Only the washing machine and the freezer were saved when the home of the Robert Tuck family, Murphy, was destroyed by fire late Wednesday afternoon. The fire was discovered by Steve Tuck, 17, who returned from school that afternoon. Two-thirds of the house was already in flames and the roof was about to collapse. The boy and other people called to help save-the two items, but every thing else was destroyed, ac cording to witnesses. Tuck re ceived superficial burns on his hand and neck. Cause of the fire is yet un determined. The stove had been out since early morning, when the Tucks left for work and Steve for high school. To aid the family, the King's Daughters of Murphy Chapel are sponsoring a show er Tuesday, at 8 p.m., Dec. 20, in the chapel fireplace room. Jackson Blvd. Dr. Graham To Get Leave for Two-Year Stay in Bolivia Ashland-Dr. Alva Graham, director of graduate studies at Southern Oregon college, will leave in January for Bolivia to serve two years as an ad viser to the educational di vision of the Bolivian govern ment. While serving in Bolivia, Dr. Graham will be employed by the International Coopera tive administration, of the U.S. state department. He will be on two year's leave of ab sence from SOC. "We at Southern Oregon college feci that Dr. Graham will make an outstanding con tribution to Latin - American relations," Dr. Bill Sampson, chairman of the SOC educa tion division said. "He takes with him a broad background of experience in both elemen tary and secondary education as a teacher and an adminis trator. In addition, he has long taken an active interest in in ternational relations which also serve to make him ideally suited for the position," Dr. Sampson said. Dr. Graham, after receiving his BS and MA degrees at Northwestern where he play ed football, took his doctoral degree at the University of Oregon. He has served as a principal and supervisor in the Portland public schools for seven years; principal of the Hillside pri vate school in Portland four years; and before coming to SOC in 1952, was a professor at Lewis and Clark college where he was responsible for the development of the ele mentary teacher program there. While at SOC, in addition to his civic activities and his directing of the graduate pro gram, Dr. Graham coached the Gold Hill Water Off Temporarily Gold Hill - City employees reported that residents on Sec ond ave. will be without water Tuesday, Dec. 20 for several hours. The water main that supplies water from Fourth st. to the cement road on Second ave. will be shut-off promptly at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Newland's Garage and Service station will be affected by the shut off. : " The shut-off is necessary to allow workmen to repair the main water line. During the shut-off a new cut-off valve and fire hydrant will be in stalled at the corner of Second ave. and Fourth st. college tennis teams to a long series of Oregon Collegiate conference championships. Doctor Graham will take with him his wife, Mary, and daughter, Judy. They will go to Washington, D.C., for a series of processing and in doctrination lectures by state department personnel. Two other SOC professors are currently serving abroad in similar positions. Dr. Eu gene W. Bowman, professor of education, is located in Quito, Ecuador; and Dr.- Aivin V. Miller, associate professor of business education, is now in the third year of a four-year stay in Jakarta, Indonesia, Going On Sale At 9:00 A.M.
