Safety Calendars Being Distributed Two Medord firms have an nounced they are again spon- goring the financing and dis tribution of safety calendars for 1961. Both businesses have for the past several years promot ed public safety in this man- ' tier. -. . , - The calendars feature a fire truck scene on one, and the "Officer Kelly" picture on the other. The local Ford dealer will sponsor the fire safety . calendars, and the Signal Oil company distributor will pro- ; mote the police calendar. Scenes on the calendars are ; specially franchisee! by the Brown and Bigelow- advertis ing concern, represented local ly by Joye Swartsley. . Fire Chief Gordon Barker said the department approves the safety reminder, and sup ports the distribution of the calendars on behalf of the Na tional Fire Protection associa tion. Some 800 copies have been ordered for use in and around Medford. . Exams Announced by Civil Service Officials Examinations for positions including social worker, child welfare adviser and specialist. public assistance adviser, pub lic assistance specialist, medi cal and . psychiatric adviser and specialist, rehabilitation adviser, and public welfare research analyst have been announced by the civil service commission. . Twiss, fire control technician of the Applegate district of the Rogue River National forest, received a $100 cash award by Neil G. Suttell, district ranger, at the Star Ranger station. The award was In recogni tion of his outstanding per formance as acting fire con trol officer during the incum bent's illness. . According to Suttell, "Twiss took over a difficult job at a critical time. He contributed materially in getting summer work accom plished In quantity and with high quality." The award was presented under an Incentive plan which is available to federal employees. Sweden is almost 1,000 miles long, though seldom wider than 300 miles. Medford School Board Favors Participation in State Project Participation in a state-wide project involving a new teach er training plan and new "mo tivating practices" at the local district level was approved by the Medford school board this week. . ' Whether the project is insti tuted in Oregon, however, will depend on whether the state department of education re quests funds from Ford Foun dation's Fund for Advance ment of Education. The state department of education and representatives of various col leges in Oregon will discuss a request for the funds at a "planning" session in Salem Monday. Medford school district's participation in the project would be in cooperation with Southern Oregon college and the state department of educa- I tion. ... . Although final plans are not yet completed, the project would involve a program in which prospective teachers would spend two years in practice, or cadet teaching, ac cording to school officials. The first year would be sim ilar to the present practice teaching program which, in volves one semester of class room practice by the prospec tive teacher. During the sec ond year, the student would be paid about half salary and would be supervised by a reg ular teacher in the school dis trict and by the college. A 12-month training period is recommended in prelimin ary plans for prospective teachers registering under the program. The 12-month train ing period, school officials noted, would mean a regular summer session of work. The sceond phase of the state - wide project involves possible approval of motivat ing practices, an aspect of the project which is considered of great importance by Medford school district officials. In this phase of the project, the district administrative staff proposes that the Med ford board study a plan of substituting other means for measuring school work than the "Carnegie unit" system. The Carnegie unit, means at tending class for 52 to 60 min utes a day, five days a week for the minimum number of days required by law for one unit of work. In Oregon the minimum number of days is 175. Dr. Leonard B. Mayfield, superintendent, noted that this gives non-academic subjects such as art and typing the same weight as a foreign lan guage, mathematics and sci ence. Extra Tim School administrators here feel that two or three periods a week in typing or art and similar subjects might be suf ficient, especially if additional work is assigned to allow the student to do it outside of school. The extra time would then be spent on academic subjects. This plan could also include phases of the team teaching plan whereby a master teach er would lecture to three or four classes in the same sub ject. Students would then meet in small discussion classes the other two or three days a week. Dr. Mayfield noted that de tails have not been worked out. Among the problems in the program, he said, is mak ing arrangements with col leges to accept students on the basis of full credit for sub jects they have taken under such a plan. However, the problem probably could be handled by the college, state and the fund agency. The project, if instituted in Oregon and carried through to completion, would extend over five to eight years. Costs above those normally carried, by the district would be paid from the Fund for Advance ment of Education. Three-fifths of Bolivia Is tropical lowlands.
