Hatfield told them his flf-j fice "must remain neutral"' but he would "go hat in hand"' to help settle the strike. Hatfield said he has made 12 attempts to bring both sides together but while lahOr; was willing, management of ficials were not. The governor said if he en dorsed one side or the othjer1 it would not help matters and. would even drive the tyo sides "farther apart." No Legal Power ' Hatfield said he has no le-: gal power to force a settle ment of the strike and he does not favor compulsory arbi"tra.-; tion. Asked how he would react to a "general strike" in Ore gon to force settlement of the Portland dispute, Hatfield said such a move would be "unwarranted" and he would "not tolerate it." The women asked Hatfield how he stood on anti-picke13Ji' and "importation of strike breakers." He noted ;thbt when he was in the legislature in 1953, he voted against'the1 anti-picketing law and wfien he was governor in 1959: he signed its repeal. y.
