Almost always when I can have the per son's stomach x-rayed or can see the films he brings, I can not see anything definitely wrong with the stomach and I have been looking at s t o mach films for 50 years Some 30 years ago when my good and distin guished friend, Dr. Rudolf Schindler popularized gastroscopy - the looking into the stomach with lighted tube passed down through the gullet - there was much discussion of "gas tritis," and thousands of peo ple were told that they had it. But many stomach special ists finally concluded, as I did, that there is no definite group of symptoms that al ways goes with the little changes in the appearance of the inner lining of the stom ach. As a result, I never can say lo a person who comes in com plaining of a certain type of indigestion, "From your symp toms I would say you have Or. Alvarez comes in with a letter from some able doctor friend of mine who does gastroscopy saying that when he looked in he saw a somewhat thin and bloodless lining,' or a somewhat reddened lining, I cannot be sure that this has anything to do with the man's symptoms. Only when the gastroscopist saw big thick ened and reddened folds in the stomach - the so-called hypertrophicd rugae, and the man has symptoms suggestive of an ulcer - will I suspect that what was seen can ex plain the symptoms. But then I won't know why the changes came, and so I won't know how to cure the man. About all I can do .is to treat him as if he had an. ulcer. Many people say they have gastritis because they suffer with gas - they think gastri tis must be a gassy disease. It isn't. The root "gastro" re fers to the stomach and not to gas. What I have been say ing can explain why I cannot answer a person who writes asking for a diet and medicine for gastritis. I don't know if the man has gastritis. If he has, I don't know if it is caus ing his indigestion; I don't know how he came to get this distress; and I don't know of any good treatment for it and this in spite of the fact that for 15 years or so I edited, one after the other, the two leading journals on Crater Plans Annual Winter Concert Central Point -The Crater High school music department will present its annual winter concert at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec, 16, in the high school gymna sium. Featured will be the band choir, Lavaliers and the Glee club, according to Norman D, Carothers, band director. The theme of the concert will be the musical and social- ogical development of man from early times to today's space age, and the implica tions of music as a bridge to world peace, Carothers said. Christmas Carol Book Is Available The Richfield Christmas Carol book, which contains 11 of the most popular carols and songs, is now available with out cost at Richfield service stations in the area, according to Ernie Kennedy, the com pany s agent here. The books, which are in limited supply, contain words and music to the carols. An additional feature Is "The Story of Silent Night an illustrated article on one of the most famous carols.
