An unsuccessfully launched Thor-Able-Star rocket was de stroyed in flight high over the Atlantic. An assortment of fragments fell in a farm area outside the city of Holguin. Although no human cjual tics were caused and damage was minor, the Castro regime charged one of the fragments killed a cow. The note was largely a re hash of Castroitc charges blaming the United States for virtually every act of opposi tion to the Castro regime which has been formally rec ognized as "Communist-con trolled" by U. S. authorities. Earlier reports from Cen tral Cuba told of new fighting in the Corralillo area, 110 miles east of Havana, where a daylong battle between Cas- troite troops and anti-govern ment guerrillas was reported Tuesday. Uiing Heavy Mortars The Castroites wore report ed using heavy mortars aiiainst their foes at Corra lillo. There was no report of casualties, nor was there any Indication of the size of the forces involved. Corralillo lies in open coun try, less than 7 miles from the north coast, and there was speculation Thursday that the anti-govcrnmeni lorccs were invaders. Reports from the scene, nowever, ncscnoea them as inmates of a collec tive farm who had risen against the government. The farmers were saia 10 rje angered by Castro's failure to imDrove their lot and by de mands that they take military traininB during their free time. The government, following the traditional Cuban custom nf announcing only victories, made no official mention ot the Corralillo battle. The colonials called a gen eral strike throughout Algeria while 10,000 students battled for hours In Algiers and 4,000 battled in Oran with police who used tear gas and clubs against them and brought up tanks to guard key intersec tions. Algiers has always been the focal point for the "keep Al geria French" extremists and the rioting was the worst in many months. Youths from the universities surged through the streets, overturn ed and burned buses and cars and hurled rocks at the hard pressed gendarmes. Students fought a three hour pitched battle with po lice in the heart of Algiers. After a brief lunchtime lull they reformed their ranks and 2,000 L-f them attacked police along the Rue Michelet, the main thoroughfare which leads up from the harbor area through the main business dis trict.
