The sun was shining brightly, then the black clouds rolled up and the rain came down in tor rents. The slorm and the respite from steady work seemed to be a good thing for the several hives of bees on the edge of the little clearing, for the in sects had been streaming into the hive for some little time before the rain started. The hive seemed almost to vibrate with the activity with in, as all the worker bees, home from the field, were ap parently working inside. When the liRhlnlng came and the thunder crashed, the noise of the hives were suddenly stilled, as if all the members wore listeninK to the storm They seemed to be paralyzed with fright. Rainbow Appears The rain stopped as sudden ly as it started; the thunder died away in the distance. The sun came out, bright and glar ing on a dripping world. On the doorstep of each hive thousands of bees began to gather; every one facing toward a bright rainbow that had appeared. The colors of the new rainbow are always fascinating, but to the bees the rainbow seemed to be terrifying and awesome. A great fear apparently took possession of every bee in the colony. . It appeared to be a deep, slunlfvine fear that hold these thousands of insects frozen in abject fright. The miasmn of panic gripped them, as though they were balanced on the threshold of a great calamity. Could it be that the great ness of a huge mass of color did something to the insects, color senses; something that really hurt them? Could their highly developed sense of color actually cause them pain? Could the colors be so vivid as to throw the bees into a form of paralysis? Color Conscious It would seem ridiculous that these insects could pos sibly be afraid of a rainbow, but they are known to be acutely conscious of color. In these Insects the color of a flower must have a definite meaning since they are more attracted to one color than another. Flowers of course attract by odor, which would seem to cancel out the necessity of the insect s necessity to depend on its eyesight. borne flowers, the orange blossom for one, make up for its lack of color by being strongly fragrant. It may be pos sible that too much color would bewilder a bee; just the same as too loud a musical note proves painful to the keen sense of hearing in a dog, causing It to howl. Being drunk with color or frightened stiff by it is a con dition unique in animal be havior. (Released by The Register and Tribune Syndicate, I960) Portland Airman Killed Near Denver Denver-IUPll-A young Air Force captain was killed Sun day when his Jet fighter plane crashed on takeoff at Buck ley Air National Guard base east of here. The victim was Capt. Law rence R. Reeves, 29, of Port land, Ore. He was stationed at the Portland international base. Buckley officials said the engine in the supersonic F-102 failed. Reeves circled around, and then Jumped from the plane about 100 feet above the ground. His parachute did not operate in time to save him, and he was dead before an ambulance reached nearby Fitzsimons Army hospital. Back-to-School Event Thursday Bnck-to-School night for parents of Medford High school students will be held Thursday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the high school. All parents of students at the school arc invited to at tend and meet the teachers and visit classrooms. It is spon sored by the high school fac ulty. Senior Citizens Officer To Speak J. M. Burk, Los Angeles, regional director of the Na tional League of Senior Citi zens, will speak in Medford Tuesday, Dec. 8, at the Med ford YMCA at 1:30 p.m. His topic will be "As a Mat ter of Right" and will concern a proposed plan of federal so cial security payments of $173 per month after the age of 60. Burk recently announced that regional headquarters of the League have been estab lished in Eugene at 1185 Chambers st.
