DECEMBER 1, 1960 Man Arrested in Disappearance of Two at Seattle New fork-IUPII-The FBI to day arrested Guy Rockwell Muldavln, once wealthy an tique dealer wanted in con nection with the disappear ance of his wife and her young daughter whose mutilated bodies were believed found in their Seattle home shortly after he remarried. The FBI said Mudavin, 37, who will be arraigned later today, was picked up in a Greenwich Village, apartment. Muldavin also is wanted by Seattle police on a charge of fraudulently obtaining $10, 000 from the stepmother of his present wife, the former bvelyn Emerson, on the pre- tense of using the money to buy antiques In Canada. H. G. Foster, head of the FBI in New York, said Seattle police wanted Muldavin in connection with the myster ious death of his second wife Manzanita Mearns, who disap peared on April Fool's Day this year with Dolores Ann Mearns, 18, her daughter by a previous marriage. Police said bits of human tissue and pieces of a human body were located in a newly sealed septic tank at the home where Muldavin, his wife and daughter lived and operated an antique shop. Muldavin, who was school ed In Switzerland, New York and Connecticut as well as tu tored privately on his family cattle ranch at Tibera, N.M divorced Manzanita in Seattle July 26 on a desertion charge and married Miss Emerson July 22. Five days later, po nce cnarged, he received cashier's check for $10,000 irom her stepmother, Mrs. Germain Winkler, to buy an tiques for quick resale in Can ada. The disappearance of his second wife, Manzanita, was first reported by her former husband, William Mearns. Muldavin, who divorced his first wife, Jo Ellen Loop, in laos after 10 years of mar riage, was not directly charged with mutilation or with homi cide. He was arrested on a technical charge of flight to avoid giving testimony relat ing to the mutilation of hu man remains.- A John Doe warrant on the mutilation charge was issued Nov. 1. Humphrey Seen In Senate Post ' Washlnglon-IUPl) - Key Sen ate Democrats wore reported In agreement today on the choice of Sen. Hubert H. Hum phrey of Minnesota for the post of assistant floor leader. Sen. Mike Mansfield of Montana, who is the assistant leader now, is scheduled to become Senate Democratic leader when Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas moves into the vice presidency. Sen. George Smathcrs - of Florlde was reported the prob able choice for secretary of the Democratic Conference, No. 3 in the line of Senate Democratic leaders. The post has been vacant since the death this fall of Sen. Thomas C. Henntngs Jr. . of Missouri. Both Humphrey and Sm a til ers were understood to have the approval of President-elect John F. Kennedy and Johnson for the leadership Jobs. Portland Shooting Charge Reduced Portland -IUP1I- An involun tary manslaughter charge was substituted for a second de gree murder complaint Wed nesday against Jerry Schmidt, 22, in connection with the fatal shooting of his cousin The boy, Lester Leland Kelly Jr., 17, was killed Tues day while sleeping. Police said Schmidt had gone to Kelly's home to awaken him so that the two could start on a job-hunting trip. Schmidt told officers he saw the boy's gun above the bed where Kelly was sleep ing, and reached to examine It. As he pulled the revolver from the holster, Schmidt said, the gun discharged and the single bullet struck Kelly In the head. Newhouse Shooting Clue Fizzles Out Portland -IUPD- Police said today that what appeared to be a possible break in the unsolved shotgun wounding of Orcgonian executive Don ald Newhouse fizzled out Wednesday. ' Detectives, who did not go Into detail, said late last week they had uncovered what ap peared to be promising Infor mation. However, they said further investigation ruled it out. Ida Lupino, Husband Reveal Separation Hollywood (UPD Howard Duff, 43, and Ida Lupino. 42 husband and wife stars of the former "Mr, and Mrs. Adams' TV series, have separated - but hope for a reconciliation The couple separated in 1953 but reconciled a month later. They have been mar ried nine years. Foreign Liquor Purchases Nixed Washington-WPD - The De fense Department today order ed U.S. military exchanges overseas to stop buying Scotch, Canadian and other foreign liquors. It indicated, however, that it mignt permit the continued sale of foreign alcholoic bev erages in officers' and non commissioned officers' clubs at home and abroad "for con sumption on the premises. Foreign beverages have tra ditlonally been bought by U.S military stores abroad for sale at low, tax-free prices to serv icemen and other eligible per sons. They became a casualty, ef fective today, of President Ei senhower s program for slow ing down the flow of dollars to foreign countries. Under the same program, Eisenhow er has ordered the number of servicemen's dependents over seas to be reduced from 484,- 000 to 200,000 by July 1962 Oregon Receives Forest Receipts Salem - (Ml - State Treas urer Howard Belton said Wednesday the federal gov ernment has paid Oregon $12.6 million as its share of federal forest receipts for the fiscal year ending last June 30. This Is nearly $1.5 million more than in 1999. Lane county gets the big gest share, $2,507,608. Doug las is next with $1,900,539 and Clackamas third with $835,429. The smallest share, $1,018, goes to Malheur county. Electrical League Plans Social Event Cal-Ore Electrical League members and those of the Electric Club of Southern Ore gon are sponsoring a social hour and dinner dance at Rogue Valley Country club starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6. The event is planned as a pre-Christmas get-together, ac cording to Clarence Weaver, secretary-treasurer of the Cal- Ore league. Ambulance Group Endorses Statement At a meeting of the Oregon State Ambulance association in Eugene last month the as sociation endorsed a statement regarding the state statute which says that ambulances are not emergency vehicles. The resolution stated that "our main concern in ambu lance operation shall be the welfare of any patient In our care, and that proper handling and first-aid procedures shall be of prime importance. We further declare that every per son is entitled to competent handling and efficient trans portation to medical atten tion. The next meeting of the as sociation will be held in Eu gene Dec, 14. Murder Suspect Arrested in Eugene Portland, Ore. -IUPII- Carl Michael Wtlwerding, 25, was arrested in Eugene Wednes day in connection with the slaying of Harley Balllngcr In Bridgeport, Calif., on Oct. 23. The suspect was brought to Rocky Butte jail here and held in lieu of $5,000 ball, pending extradition action by California authorities. Officers said Wllwerdlng was arrested on a federal com plaint charging him with un lawful Interstate flight to avoid prosecution for the slay ing of Bollinger. Joseph Thornton, agent in charge of the local FBI of fice, said authorities were watching for Wllwerdlng In Eugene because he had rela tives there.
