Recently I've been over whelmed " by responses to sdme of the trifling and self ish complaints I've expressed nere. For example, one' fellow w 1 have trouble relaxing at the end of a com plex day phoned to say he was sending me some Cutty Sark. He hung up before I could tell him I couldn't ac cept it. As it turned out, fortunatel ly, he wasn't actually sending me SOME Cutty Sark, which, n vind of import ed spirit. He was in fact send- . v.....y aark. This turned out to be a sailing ves sel. It came in a big carton. It had 1,000 microscopic plastic parts which, when fitted to gether, according to the il lustrated directions, would re sult in a full-rigged clipper ship big enough to carry a litter of cats. I'm grateful to this fellow for thinking of me. But he really doesn't understand my problem. The day the Cutty Sark came I couldn't have put five spades together to make a flush. Another generous chap, who heard about my lemon of an electric razor, sent me a de vice called a power booster. You plug it into the wall and then plug the razor into the booster. It's supposed to convert al ternating current into di "t current, which is supposed to get more horsepower out of the razor. It turned out I have one of those idiot razors that doesn't respond to direct cur rent. A man who felt sorry for me about losing my glasses sent me a talking book. He didn't seem to understand it was my long-distance glasses I lost; not my reading glasses. I was glad enough to get the book, though. A book that can be heard as well as read is, fundamentally, an exciting in vention. It isn't a book I might have chosen to read myself. It is called "The Squirrel Who Didn't Like Nuts." How Harold resolves this dilemma and re-orients him self in the world full of squir rels and nuts is, of course, the heart of the matter. It would be a disservice to the reader, or listener, to disclose it. To make the book talk, one must turn a little red plastic crank, which apparently turns a record inside the box. You turn the crank at 45 r.p.m. and the book tells the story, you see. The crank must be turned at precisely the proper speed. If it is turned too slowly, the resulting sound is like the death rattle of the bull ele phant; if too fast, it is like Mine. Flagstadt singing "Die Walkure. On the basis of this single volume, of course, it may be too early to judge the future of the talking book. I should first like to hear something perhaps more ambitious, such as "The. Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" Freud's "Interpretation of Dreams."
