Taken into custody were Jack Dean Pettibone, 21, and Charles Arthur Kornahrcns, also 21. Police said that two other suspects in the dynamiting were being sought. Police said that Pettibone and Kornchrens have admit ted placing six sticks of dyna mite down a manhole near the plant Nov. 1, 1959. The ex plosion resulted In $1,500 damage. Pettibone and Kornchrens were being held in the Beaver ton city jail in lieu of $1,000 bail each. D. - He wants to marry my sister's maid. Roger D. - Except for our background, Olga and I are alike. . Mrs, N, D. - Roger has brought us home a bombshell. We don't know how to handle it. He says he's in love with a 20-year-old girl my sister brought home with her this summer from the backwoods of West Virginia. The girl came up here to serve as chambermaid in my sister's home. Roger is 24 and teaches school out there, so he stops in at his aunt's for lunch and, once in a while, he sleeps over to save commuting. Of course I'm glad Roger looks beneath the surface and selects his friends for their fine qualities. But friendship is one thing, marriage another. Marriage brings the two fami lies into the picture. I haven't met the young lady, Roger wants to bring her here. My sister says she's charming, but hardly the type of daughter-in-law I could be comfortable with. Rog.r D. - As soon as I set eyes on Olga I felt drawn to her in ways I never felt be fore when meeting a girl. Here was someone soft and gentle. No poses, no straining. She exuded simplicity and good humor. She was helping in the kitchen at lunch-time. A few days later I joined her and the cook and had my lunch with them on the back porch. Next came lunch alone with Olga in the garden. From then on I dated her. We've been on bicycle-picnics together and to the movies. I admit I haven't given much thought to what my fam ily and friends may think of Olga. All I know is she's the girl I feel closest to and most comfortable with and I'm be ginning to love her with an intensity that says marry her! Although she comes from a mining town (not backwoods, as my mother said) she's a high school graduate and was valedictorian of her class. She Is eager for learning and even now is taking courses by cor respondence. We see things the same, even politics and Mort Sahl! Tht Council! The imme diate, general answer for Roger and his mother is that marriage, in the final analysis, is a person-to-person project and, given two intelligent and mature partners, almost any handicap can be surmounted. But to get to specifics, Rog er, you do marry a family too because as John Donne put it - no man is an island. There are deep ancestral currents which cannot be denied, save at the cost of menial health. Better to accept them and come to peace with them. So a rapproachement be tween Olga "hillbilly" kin and Roger's sophisticated relatives is important and possible, with adequate ground - paving by the lovers. What Roger must decide is whether the love and convictions he shares with Olga are strong enough to sur mount the inevitable sniping that will come their way from both camps, through the years. Aside from tills external problem, Roger and Olga meet the requirements for a suc cessful marriage In their in ternal "alikeness." At any rate there's no danger of the tragedy we see everyday: the union of two people who arc outwardly similar, but are in wardly as opposite as fire and water. Occasionally tills sort of iii'ti-kuiiiuiiiiioi lunmiitc la "sprung" on a family for dra matic effect or out of rebel liousness, in order to strike at parents where It will really hurt. Or, Roger might be sus pected of reaching out in a spirit of do-goodism, of uplift. Such motives, of course, are not valid as a basis for mar riage which, we repent, is the intimate meshing of two per sons, almost cell-for-ccll. Roger, however, seems sin cere In his love and appreci ation for Olga. At the risk of affronting his family, he is ignoring the superficial and reaching for the solid core of marriage - a matching temp erament and philosophy. (Copyright 1960, General Ftatur.i Corp.)
