Branch Manager Allan F. Perry can also boast that his father, J. A. Perry, was a stockholder in the original bank, which opened April 30, 1906. During the past 25 U.S. National To Observe 25 Years In City This Week years several noteworthy advancements for customer con venience have been made, and the next quarter of a cen tury should also see growth and success, according to Perry. The Medford National bank shown above is located at Central ave. and Main St., the location of the present U.S. National bank branch. This week the Medford branch of the U. S. National bank will observe its 25th an niversary of its establishment, Dec. 2, 1935. After 25 years, with six times as many em ployees and after undergoing two major remodeling jobs, the organization reviews a pe riod of "banking success." Friday, Dec. 2, not only will commemorate an anniversary for the Medford branch, but also marks the passage of 25 years of service for U. S. Na tional on the part of Allan F. Perry, manager, whose far ''y roots go back into Medford's banking history. His father, J. A. Perry, was a stockholder in the original Medford Na tional bank, which was open ed April 30, 1906. Actually, a banking history of Medford is not complete without a mention of its origi nation, which in this case oc curred in the old mining town of Jacksonville. In 1856, C. C. Beekman opened a bank which enjoyed a very "rare" 56 years of existence. During that time, with the exception of a limited period, there were no loans on the books. Dividends Paid Despite this unusual con dition, a consistent dividend was paid to stockholders through income received from exchange, express charges, and for keeping of gold dust and coin. ( Miners from the hills of Jackson and Josephine coun ties would come to Jackson ville with as much as $4,000 to $5,000 of gold dust in a leather pouch. This was usu ally deposited in the bank for safe keeping, or exchanged for gold coin. The bank, in turn, would send the gold dust to San Francisco. A charge of 1 per cent a month was made for this serv ice of safe keeping. Sometimes miners took a receipt, but more often they did not, mere ly leaving the gold dust with their name attached for fear a receipt, if taken, would be lost in the hills. Gold gave way to pears, and in 1912 this area's first bank discontinued, still paying all its depositers in full. Normal Growth A period of normal growth followed the opening of the Medford National bank in 1906, and it was not until the early 1930's that a need for the advantages of consolida tion became apparent. Conse quently, In December, 1935, the Medford bank became a branch of U. S. National. The first manager of the Medford branch, George Frey, stayed with the bank until his death in 1946. At that time Allan Perry, who had previ ously been note teller and as sistant manager, took over the manager's position. Medford hasn't stopped growing and neither has the bank. In 1955, a bank-from-your-car facility was installed and a major expansion proj ect completed. "From all indications, our next 25 years of business will be marked with the same type of growth and success that seems to be associated with the Medford area," Manager Perry predicts.
