Soup Garnishes Cream soups invite a touch of drama. Croutons are easy and attractive; so is chopped parsley. A dash of paprika on one side and a dash of finely chipped parsley on the other adds Interest and flavor Other favorite soup toppers include chopped chives or dollop of whipped cream or dairy sour cream. Riverside Time - Here's A Little Bug With a Great Big Itch The very little creature with the great big bite, com monly called "red bug" or "chigger," is always ready and anxious to make a per sonal contact with anyone who comes along. Originally, the red bug lived in the West Indies. Now there are red bugs in nearly all parts of the warmer sec tions of the country. He and his friends are well estab lished in Mexico and South America. He probably arrived in the southern United Stales by the way of Cuba, and he was undoubtedly waiting in Florida .long before the first Spanish' explorers set foot in the new world. Unless a person has unusual eyesight he can't even see this little pest, for a full-grown adult red bug is little more than a speck. Happy in Skin As soon as the red bug has made a personal contact and entered the skin, he is happy. Here in the warm, moist dark. ness of the flesh he immedi ately gets busy by sucking the blood of the victim. Small bumps or mounds raise up on the human skin, and a severe itching begins. In the center of the "itching place a small opening can be seen. This hole in the skin is where the little pest entered. Given a little time, Mrs. Red bug will lay eggs right under the skin. There are uncleared areas in the West Indies, as well as in the Southern United States, that are almost alive with red Thirty-Two Flu Cases in County Thirty-two influenza cases were reported in Jackson county during the past week according to the county health department. Shady Cove reported 15 In fluenza cases; Medford, 12; Ashland, 4; and Rogue River 1. Medford had one case of strep throat, and Shady Cove had one case of scarlet fever. Seven chicken pox cases re reported in Ashland, three in Jacksonville, and two in Pros pect. One mononucleosis case was reported in Ashland and another in Jacksonville, and five cases of mumps were re ported in Phoenix. Ashland had one case of mumps. Leaves, twigs, branches. blades of grass and weeds of fer wonderful places for the bugs to sit and wait. He waits for man or beast to come brushing past; then he lets loose of the grass stem andi adheres to the passing animal. Once established on or in the human skin they present an itching problem. Many preventive measures have been tried, and some are of value in keeping the red bugs at a safe distance. Dous ing feet, ankles and lower limbs with kerosene is usually effective. Some hunters and woodsmen, when entering re gions where red bugs are plentiful, tie their trouser legs to the top of the shoes. I knew a man who bathed his lower limbs in kerosene and entered a weed patch to work. By day s end not a red bug was present on his feet or lower legs. But under his short there were hundreds. The man's explanation was: "It was my bad luck that all the chiggers that day were waiting on tree branches or high weeds, not in the grass where they belonged." Per haps the kerosene drove them up and away from his feet and lower limbs. So, you may wonder, what does a red bug look like? Most people who have been pestered with them don't know, for they are easier to feel than to see. But under a strong glass, a red bug looks exactly like an under-sized flea. They are small but they Itch big.
