Three Units Set Meetings This Week December is a "free choice" month for Jackson County home extension units, This means that no project hag been given by the ' county agent to be used as a lesson by all the units. Christmas crafts are always a popular choice for projects, and out standing projects given in the past are often repeated. All the units have a Christmas party and gift exchange. Reese Creek Mrs. Ben Gardener will be hostess to Reese Creek Home Extension unit Thursday, De cember 1, at 10:30 a.m. at her home on Crater Lake high way three miles north of Ea gle Point. The meeting will be on making things for Christmas. A gift exchange will be held. Those attending have been asked to take candy and the recipe for exchange. Westside "Family Life" will be the topic for the monthly meeting of the Westside Home Exten sion Unit on Thursday, De cember 1, starting at 10:30 a.m. The meeting is to be held at the Central Point Presbyte rian church, First and Oak streets, Central Point. The meeting will include a potluck lunch. Members are to take table service, a Dot- luck dish and a gift and card for the Christmas gift ex change.. Child care will be provided by Mrs. Bryce Phillips, 3307 New Ray road, CcntrakPoint. Women who are Westside residents are invited to at tend.' Griffin Creek A Christmas party and gift exchange will be held by the Griffin Creek Home Exten sion unit Friday, December 2, at the home of Mrs. Glen V. Allen, 951 South Stage road. Mrs. Ralph Marlatt will be co hostess, They will meet at 11 a.m. for a business meeting and a covered dish lunch at noon. The project lesson will be. a demonstration of hair styling. Sorority Plans Santa Project Epsilon Sigma Alpha so- rority will again this year sponsor the "Have Santa- Will Travel" project started last year. (Simonson photo) Annual CARE Tea Opens Project Of Travelers Glub The annual tea for CARE was given last Monday after noon at Girls Community club by Travel Study club of the Oregon Federation of Wom en's clubs. The tea opened the yearly drive, which this year will raise funds for Latin American countries. Mrs. Anthony E. DeSota. Ashland, who has lived in the Latin countries many years, talked on their needs and ways of life during the tea. Mrs. Alicia V. Carter, 23 South Barneburg road, a na tive of Nicaragua, also spoke. Mrs. Carter just became an American citizen. Mrs. De Sota and Mrs. Carter were able to converse in a native language. Both told how desperately help was needed in Latin America and how very grate ful the people are for the aid from America. The Senior Citizens Activity orchestra, directed by Edward C. Root, played during the afternoon. Pouring at the tea were Mrs. Clay M. Lee, Oregon First district president; Mrs. Jack D. Brummond, corre sponding secretary of First district and president of Travel Study club: Mrs. Carl W. Peterson, junior past dis trict president; Mrs. Edward C. Root, chairman of the Council of International Clubs for First district; Mrs. Beryl Lyon, treasurer of Travel Study Club; Mrs. Frank L. Stratton, first vice president of the hostess club; Mrs. Jason Ottinger, past district presi dent and parliamentarian for First district; and Mrs. Willis T. Fasel, chairman of civic projects for Travel Study club The tea table was centered with an arrangement of bronze and yellow chrysanthe mums and tall yellow tapers. Dolls dressed in the Latin costumes, needle work, and paintings from these coun tries were on display. Travel Study club sponsors the CARE program for one week every year, but 52 weeks of the year they work Washington Chief Justice and Mrs. Earl Warren Friday announced the engagement of their daughter, Virginia, to John Charles Daly, former vice president of the American Broadcasting Company in charge of news, special events and public affairs and moderator of "What's My Line?" television show. It was reported that the wedding will be held Decem ber 22 in San Francisco during the family s annual holiday trip to California. New Garden Club To Hold Session Brownsboro - The newly organized Brownsboro Gar den club will meet at ,1 p.m. Friday, December 2, at the home of Mrs. Aron Case, Brownsboro. All women in the communi ty who are interested in the club are invited. Daughter Home Ashland - Among Ashland Thanksgiving homec o m e r s was Miss Gerl Miller who re turned from Portland to spend the holiday week end with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Clifford Miller, 003 Harmony lane. Miss Miller is in her second year at the University School of Nursing. Wreath Workshop A workshop on wreath making will be held by Med ford Garden club Tuesday, November 20, from 0 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the courthouse audi torium. Members are to bring a sack lunch, greens for mak ing wreaths, cones, wire cut ters and scissors. The Thespian's production, "The Teahouse of the August Moon," which will be present ed at the Medford High School auditorium December 1, 2, and 3, has its setting on Okinawa. Okinawa is a small, but strategic island in the Ryuku's chain south of the main is lands of Japan. At the time of World War II it was un der the control of the Japa nese. Because it was in the path of American progress to the main islands of Japan, the island was the scene of heavy fighting from March to June, 1945. The civilian population sus tained heavy losses and, a land that was already poor, was ruined. Then the Ameri can occupation forces moved in at the end of the war, they conceived it to be their re sponsibility to repair the dam age done and achieve some economic vitality among the Okinawans. Happy People The picture of the Okina wans presented in "Teahouse" is of a happy group of peo ple. The play tells how the Army "brass" attempts to achieve economic success by forcing American methods on these people. The Army offi cer who is sent to the little village of Toblkl, Instead of using the building supplies provided to build a "penta gon -shaped schoolhouse," which has po meaning for the Okinawans, he gives them the teahouse which to them is a symbol of the beauty and serenity they have been de prived of so long; TjckQls for the play are on sale at Purucker's Music House and Foster's Pharmacy They may also be purchased from members of the cast. Members spend every Wed nesday afternoon at the home, Birthday cukes are taken to patients, and clothing is pro vided for those who need it. Members attend funerals when there is no one else to do so. We try to be a 'family to those in the home," it was explained. Last Wednesday Thanksgiving party was given at the home by the club mem bers. All but six patients were able to attend, and all said how grateful they are for the visits of the women, it was reported. 4 Travel Study club also spon sors two art students, b-y- or girls, for the Hallmark and Penny Art scholarships; a mu sic student for the Virginia Brown music scholarship; and a girl to compete in the Vogue sewing contest. A contribution is made to the scholarship loan and fel lowship fund, the Saidie Orr Dunbar nursing education fund, and others. The club will hold a rum mage sale Thursday, Decem ber 1, in the Fehl building, to raise funds for these projectsr- Upper Rogue Group Announces Party McLeod - The annual 1 Christmas party of Upper Rogue Grange Home Econom ics club will be held Decem ber 8 at Eastln's Rogue Haven. A potluck luncheon and gift exchange are planned. Mrs. Robert Chamberlain was re-elected chairman of the club at a meeting early this month at the home of Mrs, Harold Barber. Mrs. Paul Tor rance was named co-chair man; Mrs. Carl Richardson, secretary, and Mrs. George Eastman, treasurer. Mistletoe Camp Plans Election Election of officers will be held during a business meet ing of Mistletoe camp, Royal Neighbors of America, Thurs day, December 1, at the Knights of Pythias hall.
