A bar in the Oakland financial district . set up a jar labeled "Herman's defense . fund" and within a few hours it was filled with greenbacks and silver ... And when President Eisenhower visited . San Francisco last month he was- reported to have commented with some amusement . over the fact he had to share the front pages with Herman. t Storm Center of Quarrel Herman is a 2V4-year-oId, 10-pound .. orange and white striped tomcat who is the storm center of a violent neighborhood quarrel that has been carried to the courts. Mr. and Mrs. J. Howard Cook have sued Herman's owners for $3,500. They claim Herman attacked Mrs. Cook on two occa sions, broke a window, ripped a screen door land "beat up", several of the Cook's 12 Siamese cats. Furthermore, the Cooks want something done to control Herman. They offered to pay the cost of surgery to quiet his allegedly roughneck, amorous behavior. But the Bowlers counter-sued for $1,500, arguing that Herman is only a "red-blooded American tomcat . . . led astray by the plaintiffs' females, being the more deadly of the species." Mrs. Cook said she was not concerned about Herman disrupting the blood line of her Siamese pets. She has her own tomcat, she said, and anybody who knows anything about cats knows that the Siamese will have nothing to do with another torn. "Everybody thinks Herman is a big Don Juan when he's really Just a Jack the Rip per," Mrs. Cook said. "You go 'ssf at any other cat In the world and he'll run away. Herman stands there and goes 'ssf right back and then advances toward you." Herman's owner, an Alameda fireman, denies that Herman is a bully. A Matter of Principle "Everybody seems to think I have a lion on my hands," he said. "But he's just an old tomcat who chases every female. "And I'm not going to have him neuter ed, either. It's a matter of principle." Herman hit the headlines again Tuesday when Mrs. Bowler reported to police he was a catnap victim. She said he had been taken from their basement and she searched for 2V4 hours with a flashlight before finding him bruised and bloody in a neighbor's base ment. ' The President improved his putting game during a 12-day visit to the Augusta National Golf Club and carded rounds of 81 and 82 as a result. He likes the course so much and values his membership so highly that it's a cinch that he will be back after he leaves the White House. Many people in Augusta ex pect him to spend the week between Christmas and New Year's at the plush Augusta course. When reporters and photog raphers feted Jim Hagerty re cently with a farewell party at Augusta, it was the first time that he had been so hon ored. Hagerty was always too eager to start a new job to get properly saluted by his ex colleagues in the past, Mrs. Majorie Hagerty said. The White House spokes man refused to confirm or deny persistent reports that he will become vice president of American Broadcasting Co. for news and public affairs. Insiders believe he will re sign soon - perhaps before the first of the year. Hagerty has often made it clear that he wants to work in New York and not Washintgon. "I'm a city boy," he says. The older one, Sybil, is 15 and brilliant, but homely. The other is Norine who's 13 and so beautiful she takes your breath away. She's bright, too. But her marks don't come near Sybil's. May be it s because she doesn t try as hard. When they were small, the differences didn't matter. But now, whenever I see them to gether at a party or a dance, it breaks my heart. Last sum mer I gave a garden party in honor of Sybil's birthday and all the boys I invited as Sy bil's friends flocked around Norine! I'm urging my sister to send them to separate camps this summer and certainly to plan for separate colleges for them. How can you display two girls side by side all the time, when one is so dazzling that people hardly see the other? Sybil doesn t seem to mind being the Ugly Duckling, but deep down inside she must be suffering terribly from the contrast with such a looker of a sister! e e Ursula W. - I know Minette has my daughters' interest at heart, but I don't see what she's so worried about. I've always treated the girls alike and helped them appreciate each other's good points. They love each other. I don t see any signs of jealousy. I admit it hasn t been easy. It seems like a trick of Nature to give us only two children. both girls, one a plain Jane and the other a Venus. What can parents do? You can t keep people from skipping over Sybil and ooh- ing over Norine. You can t stop boys from making a bee- line right past Sybil to her sister. But here's where my sister is wrong. People come back to Sybil. That's why she doesn't feel bad. She has friends, too. I don't see any point in separating the girls.. Norine thinks there's no one so witty and kind as Sybil. And Sybil likes being around a sister who looks like a starlet and has a lot of respect for her. Norine is really no menace to her big sister. : e The Council: Aunt Minette sounds as though she's identi fying with the less beautiful niece and trying to rescue her from a fate complete with booby prize! In this case, Ma ma may really know best. We agree with both women that it's hard when parents are dealt a hand of such ex tremes. Hard, but fascinating and challenging! What to do about the very tall daughter and the very short son? Or the brothers, one athletic and extrovert, the other the dreamer and aesthete? Keeping Sybil and. Norine apart may have a temporary value during a summer flr later at college. Sybil would be better able to meet people on her own, without the con stant distraction and compe tition of her sister. And the whole family would have a quiet, think-it-over period in which to see things straight and add up the score realisti cally. But the more solid aproach is the mother's, for it is based on the sisters' feelings about each other. Sybil might want her sister with her at the same college, possibly as Cam pus Queen. Norine may not mind following in her brainy sister's A-plus trail, even if she fills it with C's. As to beaux, Sybil doesn't need "flocks." One at a time will do. And there are always fine boys who, after the first once-over, do a recap and find the hidden charms of an un spectacular girl. Regardless of physical at tributes, these girls are both attractive and can remain so whether together or apart. (Copyright 1960.
