FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 25. 1960 ?arls Embargo hreatens Cuba ugar Grinding . Havana - rtipn a tt.j lates embargo on spare ma mnery parts will cause trou )le during the forthcoming - snuuiHg season, ac cording to reports from Cuban provinces. - The grinding start in t uary and already the mills nave run out of replacement gaskets for heavy duty com pressors. Hardwood rings are being fashioned for makeshift suusiuuies. Rings Saboiaa.d The same type of gaskets are being used in compressors at the Texaco oil refinery in unimoBu, wmcn tne govern ment now operates, ann ers are reported sabotaging the rings by picking wood with defects. Similar sabota can be expected in the sugar muis. Government engineers at the expropriated Esso rfin. ery are reported having dif- ucuiues witn the catalyst. This is an acrnt iicot fni transforming one petroleum proauci into another. Russian Catalyst Used . Formerly the catalyst was sent back to the U.S. pro ducer for reactivation after it had been used. Since the U.S. embargo on shipment of most material to Cuba, a Rus sian catalyst has been used. Oil sources say the Russian catalyst contains an excess of impurity and is giving poor results. Soviet technicians are reported trying to solve the problems. Severe Effect Seen The lack of machinery parts could have a severe ef fect on Cuba. The national economy depends in a large degree on the amount of sugar sold overseas. With the U.S. market cur tailed, Fidel Castro's revolu tionary regime is seeking other outlets. If it gets them and then cannot produce enough to meet commitments this would severely cramp ef forts to build up foreign con fidence in the regime. MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. ORE. But one of its two TV cam eras was operating poorly. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration said the larger of the television cameras aboard the 280-pound drum-shaped satellite was giv ing a "poor performance." The satellite is "generally operat ing well," however, NASA said. It said wide-angle photos taken by the larger camera "are not of the same good quality received from Tiros I," sent Into orbit last April 1. Tiros I took nearly 23,000 cloud cover pictures. The space agency said sci entists were investigating the trouble in the wide-angle cam era and hoped to have an ex planation in a day or so. Pictures from the narrow angle camera are "of gener ally good quality," NASA said. Tiros II was launched into orbit from Cape Canaveral, Fla., Wednesday. It is circling the earth once every 98.2 minutes at a height ranging from 408 to 431 miles. LOAN APPROVED Salem -UIPll- Public Utility Commissioner Jonol C. Audiences around the world couldn't see enough of her and what they did see set off a pande monium of whistles and hoots, She had achieved her am bition to be a great movie star, a burning desire spawn ed in the run-down Los An geles neighborhood in which she was born close by the film studios. Still, she was not fulfilled An early marriage to James Dougherty, the boy next door. and a nine-month match with baseball star Joe Dimaggio had not satisfied her crave for real love, a home-and for children. Higher Plum Sought The beautiful and alluring Marilyn Monroe, who grew up as Norma Jean Baker through 12 foster homes and one orphanage, had made it in the movies. Now she was stretching out to pluck a plum higher on the tree. Her first brush with intel lectual life had been through reading, and as a student at the actors' lab in Hollywood where the theory of acting based on the Stanislavski method was taught. She had forced 20th-cen tury Fox to make a deal with Marilyn Monroe productions which guaranteed to her fabu lous salaries and the right to make independent produc tions. Sought Foremost Actor She sought the foremost actor of the British stage and screen, Sir Laurence Olivier, to co-star in a movie called "The Prince and the Showgirl." She also married playwright Arthur Miller in 1958 in a highly touted wedding chase through New York and Con necticut. It was billed as the marriage of "beauty and brains." The romance with Miller had been a carefully kept secret for some time before the marriage. They went to parties separately to meet cas ually in a group. Miller di vorced his first wife, by whom he had two children, so he could marry Marilyn. She be came converted to Judiaism and said she felt like a daugh ter to Miller's father and mother. Another Blow During their four-year mar riage she tried to have chil dren, but three times she suf fered a miscarriage. This was another blow to the girl who had become the goddess of love and who by all rights should have had all that she ever dreamed. Marilyn Monroe's ambition seemed boundless, but her temperament had begun to be noticed by directors and oth ers on sets and off. She was always late, sometimes as much as 24 hours for an ap pointment. She would soak in the bath tub for hours and let the time slip by. And the movie star known as Marilyn Monroe would never leave her mirrir until she felt she had achieved just the right look. This some times took hours. Survived Critical Brickbats Still, her personal quirks could not dim her popularity. The movie with Sir Laurence released in 1957, was not the best she had made, but she survived critical- brickbats, Just to see Marilyn Monroe was enough. The Millers' married life began with a prediction that this, finally, was the love Marilyn had been looking for. ane compared the lanky Mil ler to Lincoln, whose picture she had kept on her wall as a girl. Miller even agreed to halt his work on a play to write a movie script for his wife. It was based on his play "The MISllls." Miller also introduced her to his circle of New York friends and she took acting classes at the actors' studio, whore the "method" had been imparted to such stars as Mar lon Brando, James Dean, Kem Stanley and Shelley Winters, sne was congratulated on her acting ability and was beginning to feel she no long er naa to rely just on allur ing poses to be famous. The Millers left the New York scene in 1958 for Holly wood. There she was to make movie with French actor Yves Montand called "Let's Make Love" before doine me Misms." Interest in Image Miller fretted in the tinsel vineyards of Hollywood. He complained that movie mak ers were not interested in words-just the image." But this was Marilyns home. Crowds followed her and the admiration was everywhere. Miller fretted about this too. And there was the conti nental charm of Yves Mon tand. It seemed to some to be particularly directed towards Marilyn. Montand, rough guy of Mar seilles, was married to Si mone Signoret, Oscar-winning French actress. She was in Hollywood with him, but still the sparks flew. So did the rumors. Coolness Grows A coolness grew between Miller and his glamorous wife. Then Montand left for France and he and his wife patched things up. The Mil lers finished "The Misfits and returned to New York, separately. Miss Monroe made a brief announcement recently that they had separated and she would seek a divorce. Then she went into hldding. Miller disappeared through it all. Once again-either as Nor ma Jean Baker or Marilyn Monroe-the sexy blonde with the tragic childhood but the world of a movie queen had failed to grasp firmly the golden ring on the marriage merry-go-round.
