Jobless Claims Higher Than 1957 Salem - IUP1I - Oregon Em ployment Commissioner Da vid H. Cameron said Wednes day unemployment compensa tion claims In the first two weeks of November were higher than for the compar able period of the 1D57 reces sion year. Initial claims totaled 14,733 compared- to 11,692 for the first two weeks of November, 1957. In 1959 the figure was 6,884. I Total initial claims for Oc tober, 1960 were 21,990 com pared to 23,380 for October, 1957 but greater than October last year. Then Jt was 12,239 new claims. Payments for the current fiscal year, through Nov. 18, were up to $6,646,537 com pared to $3,999,778 last year. The comparable figure for 1958 was $8,930,162. ' ' Oregon Supreme Court Decisions 112 South Riverside Children Have Been Playing With Dolls, Blocks for Years Where did the toys that children love so much as dolls, kites, blocks, etc. . . come from? Records and archeological excavations show that chil dren have been playing with dolls, and many other toys we still see today, since many thousands of years ago. The Egyptians were per haps the first to have dolls. These were not idols, they were strictly items to enter tain the children. Kites originated in the Ori ent. At one time kite flying was a national sport in China. Blocks, which were once called building bricks first ap peared minus any decoration. Most were somewhat larger than the average ones today. Something New Generally as soon as some thing new appears for adults, it is duplicated in miniature for children. It was not too many years after the first ap pearance of the locomotive that' a child's replica was de signed. The earliest steam en gine, however, far preceded this . , , records show a refer ence to it as far back as 150 years before the birth of Christ. . The sling shot, used by men as a weapon, and referred to in the Bible as David's weap on, has been a toy for cen turies, too. Children's tastes have changed little since ancient times. A look at the toy col lection in the British Museum would prove that. In fact, it would not be advisable to take the children there before Christmas they'd find too many toys to ask for! Salem -. Pearson Urges Participation Salem - (UPD - Acting Gov. Walter Pearson has appealed to Oregon citizens to partici pate In Alcoholism Informa tion week, Nov. 28 to Dec. 2. The week has been so pro claimed by President Eisen hower. Noting that nearly five mil: lion Americans are alcoholics, Pearson said "The cost of alco holism in human suffering, in disintegration of family life, in economic attrition to the individual and community is incalculable." Citizens were urged to visit or become acquainted with state programs that deal with the problems of alcoholism, to write the State Alcohol Educa tion Committee, 200 Dckum Bldg., Portland, and to visit the Portland alcoholic re habilitation men's and ladies' centers for problem drinkers. The public was also urged to become acquainted with the work of Alcoholics Anony mous and Al-Anon. Pearson said purpose of the campaign Is to "inform society of the advances that have been made In understanding alcohol problems and in deal ing with them; to influence attitude changes toward the problem drinker; to acquaint the public with facilities, agencies and programs avail able to them for rehabilitation and educational services." Phair Committee Declared in Red Salem - (UPD -The Ron Phair for Congress committee indicates in a campaign ex pense report to the State Elec tions division it is nearly $4,000 in the red. Phair, Klamath Falls farm er, was the Republican candi date for Congress In the sec ond district. He was beaten by Democratic incumbent Al Ullman, whose campaign ex pense filing is not yet avail able. Phair's committee listed contributions of $16,732 and initial expenses of $12,724. But the report indicated that an estimated $7,956 was still to be paid. This Included $4,500 In personal travel ex penses for Phair and the rest for ad agency expenses. The Committee to Protect Oregon's Credit, which sought unsuccessfully to defeat the state veterans' bonding meas ure on the Nov. 8 ballot, list ed expenses of $12,619. I.
