NOVEMBER 24. 1960 Safety Precautions Given To Insure ftlerry Christmas Don't let your Christmas be marred by the tragedy of fire. eaa ana follow the follow ing good rules from the Na tional Fire Protection asso ciation . , ,. they could save ine lives 01 you and your lamiiy; Pick out a fresh-cut tree ... . It's fresh if the needles stay on when you bounce the butt hard on the ground; if you cannot pull needles out of the end of branches easily, and If the stump cut is sticky with xesin. Keep the tree out of doors, standing In water or snow, until right before Christmas. Remove the tree from the house after Christmas as soon as possible. Don't get a tree that's any larger than you need ... the bigger' the tree, the greater the hazard. Saw at Angle Before putting the tree up, saw off the trunk at an angle at least one inch above the regular cut. Then stand the tree in a solid support and in water. Check the water level at least once a day. Do not place the tree near sources of heat or where it could block the exit out of the house in case it should burn and fall. Never use candles on a tree. Use only electric lighting sets 1 that bear the UL (Underwrit ers' Laboratories) label. Be careful about imported sets and bulbs , , , some are hazardous. Check lighting sets each year before using ... for frayed wires, loose connec tions, and broken sockets. Other hints: Don't plug too many cords into one. outlet; make certain- all tree' lights are off before leaving the house or retiring for night; and, if you intend to do any extensive lighting, don't try to do your own wiring. Don't let Christmas wrap pings accumulate in your home. Burn them as soon as possible. Use non-combustible mate rial (metal, glass, asbestos, etc.) to decorate your home, .whenever possible. Or, be sure combustible materials are "flameproofed." Untreat ed cotton batting, paper and some inexpensive cloth ignite easily and burn with great in tensity if not "flame-proofed." About Your Gifts Don't buy pyroxylin plastic dolls, toys or non-flameproof- ed costumes, etc. Toys operat ed by alcohol, kerosene or gasoline are especially dan gerous. And, don't set up electric trains or spirit-fueled tops under a Christmas tree. Have plenty of ashtrays around and see that they are used. Do not allow smoking near the tree, amidst decora tions or piles of wrappings. Guard against flying sparks from a fireplace with a sub stantial screen, and do not use the fireplace to burn Christmas wrappings and dec orations. Everyday Rules Be sure to practice all the other eyeryday rules for fire prevention . . . and be pre pared if fire should strike. Have water-type fire ex tinguishers that work, buckets of water, or your garden hose connected to a faucet, within reach of the tree. Shutter secret that works well with youngsters is to click when they're absorbed in what they're doing. Include all parts of that Christmas story - from out door decoration to indoor fes tivities.
