Mistletoe was collected for a town in Hawaii. The student council of the town asked for the mistletoe to make wreaths to'sell to raise money for their council. ' The Girls League has been having their traditional class skits. Each class, senior, jun ior, sophomore and freshman, presents a skit to the rest of the Girls League. The seniors and juniors have already giv en theirs. A prize goes to the class that is voted as giving the best skit. Marilee Smith is the general chairman of the skits. Macy's Annual Parade on Tap New York -(OPD- Marching bands from nine states, stars of the stage, screen and tele vision, scores of clowns and elaborate floats today high light the annual Thanksgiv ing Day parade of Macy's de partment store. The best-known feature of the parade - ljuge balloons - hasn t been forgotten. Rain or shine, "Gorgeous Gobbler" and "Popeye, the Sailor," will hover over 2,000 marchers. Scheduled to reappear after a two-year absence from the parade was an "observation balloon" based on; the first manned airship of 1873. Bands planning to march in the parade were from Charleston, W. Va.; South Hagerstown, Md.; Durham, N.C.; Reading, Pa.; York, Pa.; Clarksville, Tenn.; Weirton, W. Va.; Tallahassee, Fla.; Rad ford, Va.; Holley, N.Y., and Newark, N. J. Two Logging Trucks Involved in Crash Two logging trucks were in volved in an accident near the Lewis Creek bridge on Highway 62 early this week but no one was injured, ac cording to state police. A logging truck driven by Reginald Guy Cox, 67, Trail, hit the bridge approach then hit the loaded trailer pulled by a truck driven by Brian Richard Schauble, 22, Shady Cove. The force of the collision knocked the trailer out from under its cargo of 10 logs dropping them on the pave ment. The trailer was dam aged beyond repair, state po nce said, and the bridge rail ing was badly damaged. GR 9-2516 U.S. Population Hits 182 Million Washington -IUPD- The U.S. population reached 182 mil lion at about 2 a.m. (PST) to day, the Census Bureau esti mated. It based the calculation on results of this year's popula tion count and birth, death, and migration rates. The na tion's population stood at a record of 179,323,173 on April 1. Influencing the population total are rates for births, one every 7V4 seconds, deaths, one every 20 seconds, the arrival of an immigrant every 1V4 minutes, and- the departure of an emigrant every 23 min utes. Their net results is that the U.S. population grows by an average of one person every l'i seconds. Miss Scanlon Back From Food Meeting Ashland-Miss Seri Scanlon, director of the dining service at Southern Oregon college, recently returned from a Tri State Dietetic conference in Portland. She also attended the West ern States Restaurant and Beverage Exposition and Con ference at the new Memorial Coliseum in Portland. According to Miss Scanlon, the conference and exposition covered new trends in food service management, food misinformation, new products and equipment, the food and drug act as it affects prod ucts, and new trends in diet ing. Miss Scanlon, who held the position as career guidance chairman on the Oregon board last year, was appoint ed to serve as food adminis tration chairman for the Ore gon Dietetic association for the coming year. OSC Gets Grant To Continue Math, Science Training Corvallis - A fifth quarter-million-dollar grant has been given Oregon State college by the National Science Founda tion to continue special insti tute training for U. S. high school science and mathemat ics teachers. OSC has been one of the national leaders in the science math teacher training pro gram since it was launched by NSF in 1856. The new grant of $285,900 for 1961-62 work was announced by President A. L. Strand. The grant will be used to support another academic year institute for 45 selected teachers from across the na tion. The institutes are de signed to help teachers im prove their subject matter knowledge, to upgrade science and math training in U. S. high schools, and to increase the nation's supply of top quality scientists and teach, ers. Director of the program at OSC i Dr. Stanley E. Wil liamson, head of the science education department. One of 16 College OSC was one of only 16 colleges initially picked to start the special institutes in 1956 and has been on the se lect list each year since then. Next year, 43 colleges will offer the institutes for some 1,600 teachers. Each of the teachers picked to attend an institute will re ceive $3,000 plus allowances for dependents, books and travel. Teachers are enrolled in the graduate school and pursue especially planned sci ence and math courses. Teachers must have taught for at least three years before they are eligible to apply for the training. Information about the institute program and colleges giving the train ing will be made available to all U.S. high school teachers, Williamson said. Interested teachers may then apply di rectly to the college they wish to attend. Applications will be received until Jan. 20, 1961. Twenty-one states are rep resented among this year's group of teachers at OSC. In addition to the academic-year institute, OSC also conducts a series of special summer pro grams each year for the Na tional Science Foundation. ANDY IS HELPING SANTAS Two Americans Sentenced in France Bordeaux, France - (UPD - A French court Wednesday sen tenced two Americans to five years in prison each for rob' bing a U.S. Army armored car of $20,000.
