Where shall the parents take the child in order to find a cure? Actually, as I have to keep telling people, when child in herits a de fective organ, perhaps the brain, the eyes, the pan creas, the lr 1 H nnvc nr 5 the lungs, ok ATVAKK7 mere is nui much chance of a cure be cause we doctors cannot re build the defective organ. For instance; in the presence of polycystic kidneys, the kid neys are masses of cysts or little bags filled with fluid. In order to help the child, one would have to rebuild completely the kidneys. Where a child is born with an un developed brain, one would have to get in and build a new and a better brain. For tunately, today when a child is born with a certain type of congenitally d e f ective heart, a surgeon can get into the chest and into the heart and sometimes can repair the defect. Then the child can be well. The pancreas is the big di gestive organ which lies back of the stomach in the upper part of the abdomen. Its di gestive secretion goes through a tube into the first part of the small bowel, about two inches from the outlet of the stomach. Often these chil dren have not only a badly formed pancreas, but they have a peculiar defect In the lungs which causes a great deal of trouble. Must Suspect Fibrosis I recently read an article by Dr. Paul A. di Sant'Ag nese, who points out that whenever a child shows signs of drying out with much loss of water and table salt from his tissues - when there has been no vomiting or diarrhea - the doctor must immediate ly suspect the presence of a cystic fiborsis of the pancreas. Often, the presence of this di sease quickly can be recog nized by what children's spe cialists call a sweat test. Dr. di San'Agnesc says if the child is losing a lot of sodium chlo ride (table salt) from his body, then an effort will have to be made to add salt to his feed ing mixture. The child's dan ger is especially great if he should start vomiting or hav ing diarrhea. Then he will lose much water, and this he cannot well afford to do. Roundup Emerltu Emeritus Coniultant In Medicine niava Clinic Emerltui Profeisor of Medicine Mayo Clinic (Register and Tribune Syndicate, 1960) ton in a chronically draining car. Perhaps since childhood, every morning the person has had to change the bit of foui smelling cotton with a little pus on it. If I had such an car, I would want to get the situation cleared up. I would go to an able ear man and ask him if anything could be done to get rid of the dis charge. Perhaps he could help me by clearing out, surgical ly, some diseased cells in tne mastoid bone, just back of my ear. Perhaps, years ago, when I had a mastoiditis the inflammation did not quite clear up. Nowadays, antibi otics will quickly stop an acute inflammation in the mastoid cells. Hence, now, the formerly common mastoid op eration has seldom to be per formed. But every so often some sterile pus remains, the sources of which needs to be removed surgically.
