THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, I960 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON , A 1 Eastern Airlines Denies Statement u r j ,ii ;u n ?i 7izv jcz sAVAut- rHM n nrr m II 1 I f W WW .HOMEGROWN U H"', M gjvem WITH PURCHASES! New York - (Ml - Eastern Airlines has promised a con gressional subcommittee it would present a detailed state- i ment in an attempt to refute ; a flight engineer's charges I that flight procedures on the ! airline's Electras are"inade-; quate and indeed unsafe." ! C. I, Smith, testifying for ; the Flight Engineers associa tion (AFL-CIO), told a House investigating subcommittee in Washington the "unsafe" cock pit checks may have caused the crash of an Electra last month at Boston which killed 62 persons. Smith said Eastern's sug gested procedures were in "di rect contravention" to .those of the plane's manufacturer, the Federal Aviation agency, and the Civil Aeronautics board. Airline Denies Charges Capt. John H. Halliburton, vice president in charge of operations for Eastern Air lines, denied the charges and said the airline intended to ! present a detailed statement to "place this aspect of the matter in proper perspective." He said Eastern's cockpit a manual in many ways "far a exceeas me requirements ot the government and the Elec tra manufacturer. At Dallas, Braniff Interna tional Airways filed a S2.4 million suit Tuesday against I Lockheed Aircraft and Gencr-.j al Motors, contending the Electra was "negligently and carelessly planned, designed and manufactured." ' Braniff filed the suit to re cover the loss of one of its Electras which crashed near Buffalo, Tex., last year, kill ing the 34 passengers and crew members aboard. Blames Manufacturers Braniff contended the crash was due to the negligence and carelessness on the part of Lockheed arid General Mo tors, not because of negligence or lack of care on Braniff's part. Robert E. Gross, chief ex ecutive officer for Lockheed, told the subcommittee in Washington that Electras now in service under an FAA speed restriction "are as safe as any other transport now flying." Elwood R. Quesada, FAA chief, said he was certain that a flock of starlings caused the Boston crash. A CAB investi gator, however, said the cause of the crash had not been determined. Area Scanned for Missing Youngster Portland IUPII Police said Wednesday an 11-year-old girl missing since last week may be in the company of a parolee from the state peni tentiary and that search has moved to the Bend-Klamath Falls area. Police said they had reason to believe that Renee Hanna, last reported seen last Thurs day, was with Claude Ken neth Castle, 52. They said Castle was paroled Sept. 1 aft er serving 19 years of a life sentence as an habitual cri minal and that he was wanted for parole violation. Carried Clothing The girl was seen last Thursday walking away from her home carrying clothing, police said. Officers said a Bend restau rant owner had reported see ing a man and a girl answer ing the description of the pair last Friday and that their con versation indicated they might go to Klamath Falls. Castle was believed to have purchased a 1950 car here last Wednesday, police said.
