What a blessing. Traveling alone Is exciting. One always sits beside a com ' nlete stranger. Generally, 1 draw the most despicable types. I flew all the way to Ft. Worth once with an over weight man who had run for president once on the rromm tion ticket. This time I have been In credibly lucky. r "Would you like to sit here, Mr. Smith?" the Stewardess asked. She minted to an empty aisle seat. A young lady was sitting by the window. She was wearing a vermllllon dress that barely covered her knees. She had long ash blond hair caught up at the back by a silver clip Into a pony tnil that fell rakishly down across an ivory neck. "Do you mind?" I asked. She examined me with ex- crutlatlng calm. Her eyes were large, brown and frank She shrugged, indicating It was a matter of no concern to her, whether I sat next to her or not. . Her vermllllon dress was covered with little yellow flowers. She looked at me again, then lowered her eye lids and smoothed out her skirt with an Immaculate hand. "My name is Gale," she laid. "I have wings." She had the face of an angel, no doubt. But no wings were in sight. "1 see," I said. "Where are your wings?" I asked. "In my mother's purse," aid. "They're safe there." "Yes," I said. "I'm sure they are. That's a good place for them." "The stewardess gave them to me," she explained. "They're gold." 1 looked Into her eyes. "Your eyes are blue, aren't they?" I said. It's not some thing I would ordinarily say to a complete stranger, but one must start somewhere. "Oh, no," she snld. "They re brown." I looked Into them again. "Indeed they are," I said. "All the girls in my fam ily have their eyes brown," she said. "And all the boys have their eyes blue. Isn't that funny?" "Yes," I said, "It certainly is funny. Is your sister on the plane, too?" "I don't have any sister," she said. "I only have my big brother and my little brother." "But you said," I reminded her, "that all the girls in your family had their eyes brown." "They do," she said. "My mother and me are the girls. We have three boys. My big brother and my little brother and my father. They have their eyes blue." "I sec," I said. "What docs your father do?" "Ho lives in Alaska," she aid. "I mean," I explained, "what kind of work does he do?" "He makes money," she said, "I see," I said. "Do you know how?" "No," she said. A warm, father-like voice came over the loudspeaker. "This Is Captain Gumly," it said. "We are now beginning our approach to Las Vegas. Fasten your seat belts, please." The plane angled down ward. Cars and rooftops game Into view, flowing rapidly away, "I'm going down," she said. "We all are," I told her. Women, especially beautiful women, who have their eyes brown, often think of expert ence only in terms of them selves. "I'll bet you're four," I said. "I'm five," she said. Looking back, I see clearly that she was five, ghe was much too sophisticated for four. Grange News Sams ValUy Grange Officers for the ensuing year were elected at a meet ing of the Sams Valley Grange, Saturday, Nov. 12. Jerry Fitzgerald conducted the business session that fol lowed a politick dinner at which Mr. and Mrs. Albeit Straus were hosts. Officers elected were mas ter, Dul Ion Straus; over seer, Ernest Radoniske; lec turer, Peter Tlghe; steward. Orvillc Mose; assistant stew ard, Harold De Vos; chaplain, Mrs. Ernest Hadomskc; treas urer, Mrs. Orvillc Mose: sec retary, Mrs. Elwood Abbott; gatekeeper, 11. E. Baldwin; ceres, Mrs. Peter Tighe; pomo na, Miss Fredricka Gowen; flora, Miss Dixie Dugiian: lady assistant steward, Mrs. Harold De Vos; and executive committee, Albert Straus, Jerry Fitzgerald, and Elwood Abbott. Appointive officers will be named later. New officers will be Installed in December by Pomona Grange. They will preside at their stations the first meeting In January. Ralph James announced that there will be a meeting on the proposed toning for Sams Valley. All residents of the valley arc urged to attend the session which is sched uled Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 8 p.m. in the auditorium at the Jackson county court house. The meeting will be in re gard to previous discussions on the control of certain types of homes and location of businesses.
