Up to late in the afternoon, a member of Miss Taylor's en tourage said, her ailment had not been diagnosed. Meningitis Rumored The same source, asked about unconfirmed rumors that the beautiful young star might be a victim of menin gitis. But he added: "If it was meningitis, the doctors would have discovered it hours ago." A doctor close to the case confirmed to UPI that menin gitis was unlikely. There was growing specula tion that Miss Taylor may have a hidden tumor, but this report also was without con firmation. Miss Taylor's husband, sing er Eddie Fisher, summoned a physician from the United States to consult with British doctors on the intensely pain ful illness that has hit the beautiful star. (UPI Telephoto) Educators, Anti-Reds Defy Threats of Reprisals in Cuba Havana - (UPI) - Roman Cath olic educators and anti-Com munist students today defied threats of reprisals by Cuba's revolutionary regime. High school students called a strike this aternoon in mem ory of a student leader ex ecuted in an anti-Castro up rising last month. The vice-rector of the Amer ican-owned Vlllanueva univer sity warned the Castro regime to keep hands off the Roman Catholic institution. Government revolutionary groups warned students against going through with the memorial. They maintained a running attack against Vll lanueva for a similar demon stration of mourning. . Students at the Finlay In stitute for medical technicians, staffed by rebel army officers, were warned by the faculty they would not only be ex pelled but accused of counter revolutionary activities if they participated in the demonstra tion today. ' The widening rift between the church and state was high lighted by the stepped-up at tacks on the American-owned Vlllanueva university and de nunciation by the Confeder ation of Teacher's Unions of a pastrol letter denouncing the expansion of communism. The pastoral, by Archbishop Enrique Perez Scrantes of Santiago, was read from the pulpits of Roman Catholic churches Sunday. The Arch' bishop, credited with saving ridel Castro from the firing squad after his abortive "July 26" attack on the Moncada barracks In 1952, called on Cuban Catholics to fight against Communism with all their strength. There was speculation that the increasingly heavy attacks on Vlllanueva university, own ed by the Augustinian Fathers of Philadelphia, may be the prelude to government seiz ure. j- lrjN NORGE 2-SPEED, 2-CYCLE t 5p:: FULLY AUTOMATIC WASHER i Ci ; n ' SPEEDS-fingertip selection of the right wash, rinse, and spin speeds . i ' . v. for every fabric V Ul-i ettlif NORMAL CYCLE for alt your regular wash; DELICATE CYCLE , W J J ut l)', for special fabrics and Wash 'n Wears v - S!i 3 WASH, 2 RINSE TEMPERATURES-Hot, Warm or Cold washi ifS Warm or Cold "nse , ftST t 10-LB. No violence was reported, with 140 city policemen on guard. But the setting for po tential violence increased crowds swelled rapidly about the two integrated schools. School authorities did not disclose, until the Negroes were actually in the schools, what schools were going to be integrated. Cons e q u e n 1 1 y, crowds were not sure where to congregate at first . Two busloads of police rushed to McDonough No. 19 School, where three 6-year-old Negro girls where put in class with about seven white girls. Police Guard School The reinforcements brought the total police force at Mc Donough No. 19 to more than 100, including mounted po lice. The crowd increased to more than 500 persons and po lice stood 10 feet apart all around the building. At William Frantz School, about two miles away, 40 po licemen ringed the building, protecting one Negro girl. Gov! Jimmie H. Davis, who has sworn to go to jail rather than permit integration, was still free, at last report. The legislature, meeting in a special anti-integration ses sion in Baton Rouge, 80 miles to the north, railed at what went on in New Orleans, but did nothing about it. "I say it is now time to ar rest (U.S. District Court Judge) Skelly Wright and those offl cials in New Orleans," state Rep. John Garrett of upstate Claiborne Parrlsh said. Judge Wright ordered the integration. The While House recognized the potential explosiveness of the conflict between federal government and state in New Orleans. A spokesman for the White House disclosed today that President Eisenhower talked to Attorney General William P. Rogers about the situation. . U.S. Warns Governor Rogers warned the governor of Louisiana Saturday that if he interfered with integration, the U.S. Department of Jus tice would crack down on him on at least five charges. Segregationist leaders in the legislature ignored Judge Wright's restraining order barring nearly the entire state government from meddling with integration, and sent state troopers apparently to every school. The state was expected to file suits announcing that it is "Interposing" itself between the federal government and the schools because it feels the government has usurped pow ers not delegated to it. The legislature, called into emergency session by Gover nor Davis, whipped through three resolutions Sunday night. Tlie foremost among them proclaimed a state school holiday for today and authorized appointment of "sergeants at arms" to be posted at every school in New Orleans to bar anyone from entering them. The sergeants at arms were expected to be state policemen. In another resolution, the legislature gave itself control of New Orleans schools. The third fired the superintendent of schools and the school board attorney in New Or leans. Order Follows Quickly Less than three hours later, Judge Wright signed an order restraining Davis, practically every state official, the state legislature "and every indi vidual member thereof" and agents, employees and per sons "acting in concert with them . from enforcing the resolutions or otherwise inter fering with Integration. The order came at the re quest of the school board. The board first asked Wright to stay or rescind his integration order, and in the alternative, lo issue the restraining order. It was the third time that Wright hjts been asked to mnke such a choice, and it was the third time he has issued restraining orders or injunc tions. It was his second action Sunday. His first was to cite Slate Superintendent of Edu cation Shelby Jackson for con tempt of court. He ordered Jackson to show cause Friday why he shouldn't be held in contempt for calling a school holiday today. Kennedy, Eisenhower Assistants Start Administration Transfer Washington -ttlPD- President elect John F. Kennedy's liai son man today began the com plicated task of arranging the transfer o f administrations with President Eisenhower's chief assistant. Clark Clifford, former spe cial counsel to President Har ry S. Truman, met with Maj. Gen. Wilton B. Persons, Ei senhower's special assistant, at the White House In the first of a series of talks. Clifford said they had a "good deal of ground to cov er" during today's meeting. Clifford, a Washington at torney, told newsmen he had to show White House guards "my old White House pass which is 10 years old." Specific Problems Persons and Clifford were expected to discuss general arrangements and to set up other meetings between Eisen hower administration officials and Kennedy aides to consider specific problems in various fields. Such matters as foreign pol icy, defense, and farm policy undoubtedly will be taken up in more detail at the subse quent meetings between ex perts on those subjects. It was learned that Kenne dy's advisory committee on defense department reorgani zation is considering a propos al to eliminate the secretaries of Army, Navy and Air Force, and give stronger power to the defense secretary. The group, headed by Sen. Stuart Symington (D-Mo.), al so is weighing a plan to put greater authority in the chair man of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Symington will confer with Kennedy next Saturday in Florida on the defense pro. posals. To Encourage Unification Under the defense plan, the secretaries of Army, Navy and Air Force would become un dersecretaries of defense to encourage unification. There is no thought, however, of merging the three services in to a single force wearing the same uniform. In the agricultural field, the Kennedy administration's first action may include steps to cut surplus grain production and sharply expand donations of surplus food to the needy. Democratic farm sources said top priority probably would be given to drafting a new wheat bill for considera tion early in the new Con gress. Kennedy's advisers have been working on a plan for controlled marketing of wheat in price-protected do mestic markets. The next secretary of agri culture is considered almost certain to announce establish ment of a food stamp plan for moving more surplus foods into the homes of unemployed and other low-income fami lies. The Democratic plans were being developed even as poli ticians were still discussing the narrow margin of Kenne- Stock List Extends Decline of Friday New York - (UPI) - Slocks extended Friday's decline in the early trading today. MedfordTribune dy's victory and Republican efforts to get vote recounts in some states. GOP National Chairman Thruston B. Morton said Sun day he knew a vote recount would not upset Kennedy's election. But he said he had asked GOP leaders in 11 states to check the possibilities of a recount because any irregu larities that are found "should be fully explored and investigated." Morton said it would also be good for the morale of party workers if they found (it a recount that they had car ried their state for Vice Presi dent Richard M. Nixon. 000000 o o wiggly.
