Medford Tribune jr. ' . - t' VOTE ' ' SECTION D MEDFORD, OREGON, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13, I960 PAGES 1 to 8 Congress Expected To Hear Cal! For New Frontier' Legislation Washington- HIPD -Presidents elect John F. Kennedy is ex pected to greet Congress next January with a priority call for "new frontier" legislation reminiscent of the first 100 days of Franklin D. Roosevelt New Deal. Both Kennedy and his run ning mate, Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson, Tex., have spoken of such an opening legislative drive in their recent cam paigns. On Johnson, vice president-elect, will fall heavy Actresses File Suits for Divorce Santa Monica, Calif. - (UPD -Blonde actresses Shelley Win ters and Marilyn Maxwell Thursday filed divorce suits. Miss Winters, 35, accused her husband, actor Anthony Franciosa, 32, with cruel and inhuman conduct during their three-year marriage. She said they were childless and she needed no alimony. Miss Maxwell, 38, claimed her mate, producer-writer Jerome L. Davis, caused her mental and physical suffer ing. She asked support for herself and her child, Mathew, 4, and a division of commun ity property. Miss Maxwell and Davis were wed in 1954. responsibility for pushing leg islation covering foreign and domestic issues in congres sional councils. By calling on Congress for quick action in a number of areas, Kennedy hopes to ex ploit a time-tested maxim that a president is never so persuasive with Congress as during the early weeks of his administration. In those early days the legislators have not forgotten the new president's power at the ballot box. Several study groups have been at work for Kennedy for months reviewing foreign policy, defense policy, de fense reorganization and other matters. Reports of those groups will help decide the details of Kennedy's legisla tive program and select its priority items. To eliminate congressional roadblocks which threaten the program, Kennedy may take action-openly or private-ly-to effect some changes in Congress itself. He may, for example, support changes in the complexion of the House Rules Committee-by curbing its powers or changing its per sonnel. Revisions in President Ei senhower's budget for the year beginning next July 1, should provide one vehicle for mov ing the government towards the "new frontier" to which Kennedy has directed his party's course. Many of the government's foreign and do mestic activities can be ac celerated with increased appropriations.
