Mark Hatfield left Wednesday flight on the first leg of a trip to oouth America. , Hatfield flew to Seattle en route to Washington, D.C, where he will rendezvous with governors from. 35 other , states. The governors will -make 10-day goodwill tour of South America, which Hatfield hopes to combine with trade conference meetings lnvolv- Jng Oregon. The tour will include Ar gentina and Brazil. U.S. Plans Lunar Orbit (or Three Men by 1968 . Washington (Science Serv ice) - The United States has yet to launch a man into space, but plans to put threo men into orbit around tha moon and bring them back to earth by 1968. The design of the lunar ve hicle, called Apollo, has not yet been settled, Dr. Fred erick R. Rlddell, specialist in space vehicle design for Avco Research and Advanced De velopment division, Wilming ton, Mass., said here. Avco is working on Apollo design for the National Aeronautics and Space administration. Dr. Riddell was here to address' the sixth session of the Space Research and Technology In stitute at the University of Maryland. - "The shape of the Apollo vehicle will depend upon tha path it takes," he told Sci ence Service. Dr. Riddell fa vors a slender, bullet-shaped design as the best shape to solve the problems of intense heat involved in re-entry from a distance as far as a clrcum lunar orbit. The main obstacle to solu tion of the heat problems In volved In the re-entry of tho future Apollo is that thera is no test facility on earth, to duplicate temperature con ditions of re-entry from tha scheduled trip around tha moon and back. Dr. Riddell said. "Because of this ignorance, we will have to allow a little leeway in design and materials." Marked Departure'-' Apollo will represent a "marked departure" from the Mercury capsule that will be used to launch a man in space , sometime this year, according to tne schedule of NASA The Mercury capsule Is purely ballistic. Once it is in launch, It is beyond con trol," Dr. Riddell said. "Tho Apollo will be desiened to have the maneuverability tha Mercury capsule lacks." Present plans are to supply maneuverability with small rudders. The great problem of pro tecting man from the heat to which the exterior of Apollo will be exposed both in launch and return may be solved by combining in various areas of the vehicle new materials, plastic and ceramics, to draw heat away from the ship. Tho way to accomplish this is known, the Avco specialist said. .
