UNDAY, NOVEMBER 6. I960 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, ORE. A 7 Gunnar Deplores GOP Phone Hoax Grants Pass, Ore.-OIPD-An unidentified person has made phone calls in the Salem area urging Republicans who are Catholics not to vote for Dem ocratic Presidential Candidate John F. Kennedy because he is a Catholic, Oregon GOP Chairman Peter Gunnar said Friday. He described it as an "il legal and foul" campaign to hurt Vice President Richard EVE NYE OPPOSES MINIMUM WAGE OF $1.00 In tht 1959 legislature Mrs. Nyt voted against the minimum wogt bill which would have insured a minimum wage of one dollar an hour for Oregon's working people who have never hod any wage protection. Her vote wos one of the votes that permit the contin union of 50 to 85 cents an hour wages In this state. These working people are the forgotten people who have no labor union to aid them in acquiring a fair living wage. With such substandard wages the whole economy is harmed from the smallest business man to our largest merchandisers. The vote of Mrs. Nye is a direct affront to the intelligence of every person in Jackson county and the stole of Oregon. ; Pd. Pol. Ad. Elect Gregory i Com., P.O. Box 1382, Medford, Oregon M. Nixon, the Republican can didate. Gunnar said he was advised by state GOP headquarters in Salem Friday afternoon that a woman calls and identifies herself as a "Mrs. Jones, of the Republican committee." Then, Gunnar said, she asks what their registration is and when they replay Republican, she says, "good, we've got to beat that Catholic." Republican officials heard of the calls, Gunnar said, when one Republican woman who had received such a call in Salem telephoned GOP- headquarters to com plain. In a statement issued here, where he is on a campaign swing, Gunnar said "on behalf of all Republican party of ficials, I deny any part in this disguisting attempt to play up on religion." Mark Hat field announced Friday he will Include $17 million in his 1061-63 budget recom mendations so that local prop erty tax relief will be pos sible by increased slate sup port of elementary and sec ondary education. The funds for this purpose are available within existing resources without requiring an Increase in present tax rates, Hatfield said. At present, slate school aid totals $107,632,140. A total of $5,77,B0 will Be required under existing law because of increases in the number of school children. The governor said the addi tional $11 million would rep resent an Increase in the rate of state support.
