Far Western States Give Close Edge to Kennedy To Capture Election By PETER j. hyfs San Francisco - IUPD - The election outlook in the seven Far West states, which have total of 60 electoral votes: CALIFORNIA - (32 elec toral votes)- - It's a tossup in this key state. But In the past two weeks Democrats have been much more enthusiastic iiu ujiuiu5"C preaicung a Kennedy victory than have Republicans in predicting a win for Nixon. Republicans insist Nixon will carry h i s home state, but most admit It will be very close. Demo crats hold a 3-2 edge in voter registration, but California backed Eisenhower in 1952 86. . ' ARIZONA (4 electoral votes) -Experts pick Nixon by a hair In a state that has been back ed a loser in a presidential race. An independent poll quoted by the Arizona Repub lic showed Nixon ahead. But Sams Valley Girl Wins Speech Event Cathy Fredrick, Sams Val ley school, was named winner of the Jackson Soil Conserva tion district public speaking contest Tuesday night at Eagle Point, according to Bob Loni way, district .conservationist. Susan Harper, Eagle Point speech department, and Vic Halsey, Eagle Point FFA chap ter, also gave "excellent" speeches, Lonzway said. The Grants Pass win ner will represent southwest Oregon in the state finals scheduled for The Dalles Nov. 16 to 18 during the Oregon Soil Conservation districts' convention there. Al bert D. Rosscllint faces a stiff challenge from State Supt. of Public Instruction Lloyd An drews. OREGON - (6 electoral votes) - Most experts give Nixon the edge. A profession al poll taken for the Repub licans showed Nixon would get 53.2 per cent of Oregon vote to 44.3 for Kennedy and only 2.5 undecided. Demo crats, with a 75,000 registra tion advantage, are predicting victory. Democrat Maurine Neuberger is favored to beat out Elmo Smith for her late husband's U. S. Senate seat. NEVADA - (3 electoral votes) - Las Vegas oddmakers tab Kennedy a 9-5 choice na tionally and Nevada is expect ed to go for Kennedy's al though by a much narrower margin. Democrats have a 2-1 voter lead. Former Republi can Sen. George (Molly) Ma lone is attempting a comeback against Rep. Walter Baring, but the Democrat is favored. HAWAII-13 electoral votes) - Nixon held a comfortable edge in the minds of most ex perts at the outset of the cam paign due to his personal cam paigning in the islands. Three classes lasting two hours are being sponsored by the Jackson county health de partment and the Oregon state board of health. The first meeting is scheduled at 7 p.m. in the Red Cross audi torium, Nov. 17, in Medford. The classes have been plan ned for personnel from hos pitals, nursing homes, homes for the aged, group care homes, and nursery schools. The refresher course includes discussions of normal nutri tion and meal planning, modi fied diets, food sanitation, and food purchasing. ' Invited to the course are staff members from Happy Time day nursery, Magruder's day nursery, the Doll House, Beecher sanitarium, Crosby nursing home, Medford nurs ery school, Miss Pat's nursery and day care, Jackson county farm home, Medford conva lescent home, Millcdge con valescent home, Mitchell sani tarium, Mountain View nurs ing home, Ashland General hospital, Crater Osteopathic hospital. Rogue Valley Me morial hospital, Sacred Heart hospital, Bob and Doris' home, Lyn Haven, Rogue Valley manor, McCue guest home. Mountain Brook side Inn, Pearl Watson's home, Rowcll's Family home, and Walsh Ha ven for the aged. Certificates from the state board of health will be award ed to those who complete the course. Kennedy appears to have grown stronger In the absence of burning issues.
