o MONDAY. OCTOBJH 31. 19M Communications Letters to the Editor muit bear the name and address of the writer, although under certain circumstance! the use of a pen name or initial for publication is permissible. The Mail Tribune reserves the right to edit all letters with a view to clarification and condensation. Letters submitted for pub lication must not exceed 400 words. The letters printed in this column do not necessarily represent the views oi the paper; in fact the contrary is often the case. The Facts Speak To the Editor: I was much amused to read in Friday's Mail Tribune of Dr. Durno's statement that Porter has $50,000 for his campaign. 1 Isn't It reasonable to expect trjat he would spend some of tliis vast sum on television time in Jackson county; Dur no's home territory, to answer Durno's charges, if he had it? Yet he is rarely seen on TV except for occasional spot- an nouncements, usually at non peak hours and inexpensive times of day; Consider Durno's campaign expenditures, on- the other hand, in this county alone. One can hardly turn on TV without ' seeing him, some times for 15 minutes at a time, at a peak hour; besides which, he has newspaper ads, two at a time, to announce these spectaculars. -tie has spent generously on radio, too, judging by the fre quency of his announce ments. ; And let's not forget the billboards: huge ones, up and down the county. rDr. Durno must think the voters are deaf and blind if he thinks they would fall for his nonsensical statement. We see and hear the products of his exorbitant campaign-expenditures day after day, kpowing that the same pat tern is being followed in the other six counties of the Fourth District. Porter is conspicuous only by his absence on all the communications media. A Democrat, lacking the gen erous financial support of any wealthy organization, he has to make up in legwork what he lacks in cash. Any child knows Porter would buy ad vertising here and elsewhere if he had $50,000 at his dis p6sal. The facts speak for themselves. ' ' Mrs. Hazel McMahan -'- 3524 Table Rock rd., Medford. Our Growth Is Cited To the Editor: It would be a good idea for you to take a . trip around the Rogue Riv er valley, observe the tremen dous growth and think seri ously over the changes made ditring the past eight years while you are deciding on who to vote for, for president of-the U.S., Tuesday, Nov. 8. Senator Kennedy has based the greater portion of his campaign on the economic issue and has stated many, many times that "we are standing still economically under the Eisenhower admin istration." .This is not the truth. Nev ercin the history of the nation have we moved forward ln every field as rapidly as we have in the past eight years. The sound growth and expan sion is tremendous. One fig ure alone which is impres siye is that our economy has now absorbed 23,000,000 women into the working force of the U.S. and still kept the number of unem ployed at a low figure. Healthy economic growth In the Rogue valley is evi dent everywhere with the beautiful new housing areas, shopping centers, medical centers, industries at White City and elsewhere, business buildings, dozens of attrac tf.ve new motels, hospitals, unbelievable retirement home, new schools and tremendous growth of the school systems, Southern Oregon coll ege where the number of stu iffy wife"? Vice President Richard NScon has never suggested stopping at this point. He is interested in further sound economic expansion under a government which u n der stands our free enterprise system. He will be an excel lent president. Wally Iverson ' 1316 Queen Anne, ,' Medford. Nasty Cartoon To the Editor: Dfirlng my over 40 years as subscriber to the Mail Tribune and its forerunner papers, I believe this (Herblock, Friday, Oct. 28) is the most repulsive, and I hope I will never see an other, such a nasty cartoon ln The Medford Mail Tribune. Carl J. Brommer Plaza Apt. 505 Medford. ; Fine Men Maligned ' To the Editor: Of course you will not publish this, but I must tell you anyway that I think you owe your better class of subscribers an apol ogy for the language used in your front page cartoon of Friday, Oct. 28. . Do you know that you are speaking of the two finest citizens of these wonderful United States? Shame on you, Mr. Editor. Mrs. Mary A. Brooke 344 South Grape st., ' Medford. Quemoy and Matiu To the Editor: Although only a rank amateur regarding things military, I can follow Kennedy's reasoning about the defense of those two off-shore islands, Quemoy and Matsu. It is the belief in military circles that within a few years China will have a stock-pile of atomic weapons. It might be well to bear in mind that the Chinese invented gunpow der. Therefore, if China, like Russia, -becomes able to turn out . these weapons 'like sau sages,',, pur Navy, had better not getr close to the Chinese mainland. Those two stationary tar gets, Quemoy and Matsu, will be subjected to such terrific sustained bombardments that human hearts and nerves will find them unendurable. Besides, how does a coun try, no matter how powerful, go about defeating a nation of - 650,000,000 people, one third of whom their rulers consider expendable? . . David Frisch P. O. Box 292 White City, Ore. , Against Free Trade , To the Editor: I leel that every one of Congressman Charles O. Porter's constitu ents should know that he very firmly insists on continuing the unconstitutional interna tional control of tariffs which is imperiling and destroying American industries. "We trade and sell more than we buy," he said in an swer to my recent inquiry, "We must not be afraid to compete." ' How does Mr. Porter get that way? There is, at this moment, a formerly unheard of, staggering $24 billion in foreign credits charged against our rapidly dwindling $18 billion in gold reserves that proves we are NOT sell ing more than we buy. Be cause we cannot compete ei- PERL Funeral Home ' SPACIOUS PARKING LOT ther at home or abroad with the murderously low prices of foreign industries, the dol lars we spend abroad are not coming back to us in trade. They are coming back to take our gold from us at a frighten ing rate. Just how does Mr. Porter suggest that U. S. plywood mills compete with Japanese mills subsidized with the pres ent free trade agreement? Does he suggest that we cut our American living standard down to the level of .the Jap anese? Are we supposed to work for 25 cents an hour as the Japanese people do? Folks, make no mistake about it. This anti-American, disastrous free trade agree ment with Japan will soon affect the financial income, not only of plywood workers but of every voter in the 4th Congresional District. For this reason I urge you to vote for Dr. Edwin R. Dur no for. Congressman. He has promised to do somthing about this. L. C. Powell 316 S. E. Eighth St. Grants Pass, Ore. To Armsl To the Editor: Dog lovers, To Arms! Vote Measure 16, Dogs running at large, YES if you think freedom should be extended to dogs. I have a small dog who is, I must admit, as useless as a dog could be, BUT who is, in my estimation, worth infinite ly more than ALL the lawns and flower gardens in the state of Oregon (or anvwherp else, for that matter). Kemember, for dog freedom vote-Measure 16, For Dogs Running at Large, YES. Floyd R. McCabe Mt. Pitt, Star route Butte Falls, Ore. Pendleton Flier Object of Search Cheyenne, Wyo. (UPD Darkness halted an air search Sunday along the Colorado Wyoming border for a miss ing light plane piloted by James Green of Pendleton, Ore. Civil Air Patrol planes from Colorado and military craft from Lowry Air Force Base at Denver resumed the search at dawn today. Nightfall prevented search planes from completing a check of a report from an unidentified hunter, who said he saw a small plane crash in mountainous timber country in the Penlc Pass area near the border of the two states. - Green, was reported en route to Oklahoma City to pick up his wife. Legion Head Says Signs Misleading Portland - "Veteranr' day will be a mockery in Oregon for more than 30,750 veterans eligible for GI home loans if the citizens are misled by the flood of billboard advertis ing which implies Measure 13 would cost the taxpayers money," according to Merrill E. Johnson, American Legion commander for Oregon. "These billboards, showing a burdened taxpayer weight ed down by money bags la bled 'another $135,000,000," are misleading since the Ore gon treasury made $flV4 mil lion during the past 15 years from home loans to veterans," he said. "If this $6V4 million net profit had not been collected by the state department of veterans affairs to alleviate the tax burden, this sum would have gone to a few money lenders. "I am shocked by the mis leading interpretations grow ing out of these billboards and ask voters to join in cor recting this unfair approach. "Greed for profit," the Or egon City Legionnaire assert ed, "is the sole motivating factor behind these billboards and the citizens of Oregon ought to be told about it." Eleanor Holm Saved by Knife Miami Beach - (UPD - An emergency operation on one time swimming ' champion Eleanor Holm was credited today with saving her life after 'she had taken an cjyer dose of deeping pills. Miss Holm, 43-year-old ex wife of showman Billy Rose, was reported resting comfort ably at St. Francis Hospital. Physicians said she probably would remain there the rest of the week. Ambulance attendants took Miss Holm to the hospital. Surgeons in the emergency room cut into her chest and inserted a breathing tube. The former showgirl was reported out of danger 24 hours l,er. Chicago - (UPD - Two pretty, black-stockirfged coeds met Vice President Richard M. Nixon here Saturday with a sign reading: "University of Chicago bookworms pick Dick. Other worms pick Jack." i I No Push-Button Magic for Peace, Kennedy Declares Philadelphia - (UPD - Sen. John F. Kennedy derided Vice President Richard M. Nixon's strategy for peace today by in sisting "there is no push-button magic" for averting war. .The Democratic Presidential candidate said he is "con vinced that peace can be ob tained only through a strong-' er America - and America in which a strong economy, sup porting a strong defensive posture, is manned by a citi zenry strong in their sense of purpose ..." But he said Nixon's "grand strategy is to create a series of committees, conferences, councils and good will tours." "The next war may be started and won by merely pushing a button - but there is no push-button magia for winning the peace," Kennedy said. Fourth Straight Day The Democratic standard bearer spoke out in a speech prepared lor delivery while motorcadlng through Phila delphia in his fourth consecu tive day of bidding for Penn sylvania's important 32 elec toral votes. He had a busy day of cam paigning scheduled in Penn sylvania's largest city, a Democratic stronghold whose votes must offset those of Republican-dominated areas if Kennedy is to carry the Key stone State. State police estimated some 30,000 people turned out for Kennedy's appearance at a shopping center in Levittown - a figure which probably was high but a crowd which was peppy and large despite Ken nedy's lateness of three hours. Text Contains Pledge Kennedy concentrated1 on the issue of unemployment at Levittown, where a number of workers at the U.S. Steel Corporation's nearby Fairless Works reside. But he failed actually to utter the major campaign pledge set forth in a prepared text released to newsmen. This pledge, which aides stressed that he stands by, was to set a "full employ ment" goal of 82 million jobs by 1968 if he is elected presi dent eight days from now. The current number of jobs is something in excess of 68 mil lion and Kennedy's target figure would mean leaving only a bare minimum of the working force unemployed.
