Thai Graduates In U.S. Proving Native Loyalty Washington- (UPD Thai stu dents graduating from U.S. schools are proving that loy alty to native soil is stronger than the lure of high Amer ican salaries. "All but a very few" Thai students reject offers of high paying jobs in the United States, according to Luang Videt, educational counselor at the Thailand embassy. Vi det himself, was a student in the United States 30 years ago. A graduate engineer can earn a starting salary five times greater in the United States than in Thailand. Attraction Great "The attraction is quite great here," Videt said in an interview. "But we need all the men we have for the de velopment of our country. If the student has a love for his country he must go back." There are more than 1,000 Thai students scattered among 200 colleges and universities in 38 states. Indiana Univer sity, which has a contract with the Thai government, has 200. Students receiving scholar ships from the Thai govern ment are required to return home upon completion of their studies which sometimes includes a brief tour of on-the-job training in U.S. in dustry. For most others, the only legal restrictions on their de cision to stay or go home are the U.S. Immigration laws. Half Are Women About half of the Thai stu dents are women. They,, as well as the men, are free to marry in the United States. "This Is something that does not concern lis at all," Videt said. "It is a private matter so long as they have consent of their parents. "We have no objection to Inter-racial marriages. The world will be one some day anyway." Videt said he has not heard of a single case of racial dis crimination against Thai stu dents during his eight months with the embassy. Few Problems Encountered . As a matter of fact, he said, Thai students encounter few problems while studying in the United States. Most receive extensive Eng lish training before leaving Thailand. Those who have trouble with the language when they get here receive further training at the Lan guage Institute in Washington or Michigan State University, he said. Some students have part time jobs, but in most cases parents, the government, or private organizations provide the $2,600 to $4,000 needed a year by Thai students at U.S. schools. Government officials re ceive full salary while they are on leave for foreign study.
