Mm, E. G. - We have three fine boys. Tom is 14, Billy 10 and Jimmy 7. Tom and Jim my never give, me a minute of trouble. They play nicely either alone or together. But Billy! He makes up for the other two. Let Jimmy spend an hour setting up his trains and Billy swoops into the room and kicks them into the four corners. When Tom's on the phone talking to a friend, Billy will start shoot ing his cap pistol like mad. I'm called to school several times a month because Billy forged my name on the home work paper he was supposed to show me, or shot ink out of a water pistol I didn't even know he had. His latest trick at home is to fall down and yell, "I'm paralyzed." He yells and yells until I rub his leg and help him up.1 Billy G. - I "hate my life. At home I have no one to play with. In school they're al ways picking on me. What ever I do. somebody gets mad, I tried to do a trick and make my mother laugh and I broke a lamp and made her yell. I brought my turtle to school but who cared? Bobby Green had a snake in a big box and that was the big at traction, I started to tell 'my father how I was picked to pull the curtains for the Thanksgiving play. What hap pened? Tom ran in to talk about the 100-meter race he won that day in the high school meet. They really don't care about me. Once in a while I just make them care. I do things. . The Council: Billy feels lost and is making desperate at tempts to be "found." The sandwich child in a family can never be sure just where he fits in. Is he one of the big kids and counted in on decisions and responsibili ties? Or is he lumped with the baby who is treated more like a toy than a growing boy? Billy thinks of himself as the stale bread of the sand wich rather than the juicy roast beef. Position In a family, many studies have shown, accounts for some of the wide differ ences in children born to the same parents and, ostensibly, treated the same. Actually, when you think about it, no two children are born to the same parents. The parents are older each time, more pre occupied. The home surround ings change with the presence of brothers and sisters.. And while the oldest child and the youngest have a certain in alienable role, merely from the accident of birth, the mid dle child is often in danger of being lost in the shuffle, so far as status and prestige go in the family constellation. This lays the problem of Billy squarely in the laps of the entire G. family, who in turn can enlist the aid of Billy's teacher. Here is a normal boy, unhappy for normal reasons which can be removed, it seems, by the con certed effort of the important people in his life. For a while, Mr. and Mrs. G. may have to think of Billy as an "only" child. He is cer tainly a lonely child. He must be taken out of the chorus once in a while and given featured billing a solo out ing with his father, a "secret" whispered in his ear by his big brother, the triumph of winning a checker game from his mother. How important he'll feel out for dinner in a restaurant, just once, alone with his parents! In other words, Billy can be wooed into joining the family team instead of heck ling it from the outside. When he is assured that he is im portant in his inner circle, he can venture forth among his contemporaries and work off tile high spirits which are now used so troublesomely for a primitive sort of recognition.
