WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 26. 1960 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, ORE,, Texas Surveying Crew Leaves Job in Haste Arlington, Tex. - IUPD - Nemo took a walk and It scared the dickens out of A. J. Rankin and his friends. It happened Monday when Rankin, an engineer for Texas and Pacific Railroad, took Charles L. Curnutt and two other men out to survey some property. The grass in the field was about three feet tall. Curnutt stooped to adjust some of the gear they were using when he heard one of the others scream: "Look out, Charlie. There's a lion that's going to jump on you." The four men made the 1,000 feet back to their car In dead heat. Later, it was learned Nemo the lion is a one-year-old pet of V. C. Masters and Is generally kept in a cage in his office at Masters Electric company, unce in a wnne ne lases a walk for a little air. Nemo has had his big fangs taken out, and has been dcclawed. ' He is well liked by most of the residents of the area and probably just wanted to make friends. Portlanders Lose Appeal for Stay of Deportation Order San Francisco - TOPD - Two . wprkmen from Portland, Ore faced deportation today on charges of Communist activt ties during the depression. The U.S. Court of Appeal; refused Monday to halt the de portation of William Macklc, 51, -a house painter, and Ha- mish MacKay. 55, a car penter. They were scheduled for deportation Sunday, but were , granted a stay by the court However, the court's decision ' yesterday left the U.S. Immi ' gralion . Service free , to go ahead with deportation plans, Born in Finland ; Mackle was born in Finland while his parents were on a -trip there. He hasn't been there since he was eight months old and doesn't speak Finnish. MacKay, - who is married and has sons 29 and 17 years old, came to this country. from Canada at the age of 21. He designated Vancouver. B.C for his deportation, but ex pressed fears that hs might not be able to obtain a job . there. Wayne Morse, (D-Ore.i( has bills pending to stop the . deportation, but congress ad journed before acting on them., ' ' Morse said in Portland Mon day he would seek interven- Gunnar Claims GOP Choice in Senate Newport - (DPI) - Oregon GOP Chairman Peter Gunnar said Tuesday that if the No vember election results in a 15-15 tie in the Oregon senate, il will be the Republicans' turn to name the senate president. .In 1957, Gunnar said, when the voters sent 15 Democrats and 15 Republicans to the senate, "the Republicans gave the opposition the privilege of electing the president. The rules of fair play now dictate that If another tie should re sult, the Republican member ship in the senate should have the same privilege they ex tended to their Democratic colleagues in 1957." Business Leaders Question End of Current Downturn Mrs. Neuberger's Aide Challenged Salein - IUPD - Fred Decker of Corvallis, head of the Ore gon Veterans for Nixon-Lodge group, -has challenged the chairman of Maurine Neuber ger's Democratic senate cam paign committee to a debate over Mrs. Neuberger's state ment that America should not run the risk of nuclear war in defending West Berlin. Decker's letter was to Al lan Hart,, Portland, and said each side ,should include ei ther an individual or team of debaters on the question, "Re solved: The U. S. government should announce that it re fuses to risk nuclear war to keep West Berlin free." Decker described Mr Neu berger's statement as an "at titude of appeasement." Hot Springs, Va.-IUPB-A curring note of uncertainly' is running through a meeting of top business leaders here, questioning official forecasts that the economic downturn is over. .. Many of the approximately 100 corporation presidents and board Chairmen attending session are concerned about .an intangible they call consumer confidence." People Believed Worried The executives are afraid that people are worried enough about the future-their jobs, their incomes-to put off buying items they can afford. This kind of hesitation leads to the very results the con sumers fear because it hurts business. The executives are here for the semi-annual meeting of the Business Advisory Coun cil, a group which advises Commerce Secretary Fred erick H. Mueller. The council's 15-man panel of economists forecast Friday that total business will rise in the last three months of the year but remain unchang ed in the first half of 1961 Total output of goods and services-the gross national product-fell slightly in July, August and September. Further Slump Predicted . The economists also predict ed that industrial activity would slump further before rebounding in 1961. That would mean additional layoffs of workers in manufacturing and processing industries, even if employment continues to expand in lower-paid serv ice lines. Mueller said he personally was more optimistic than the economists. He declared, "We are not in a recession.
