The policy statement was approved by the GOP State Central Committee after be ing drafted and amended by county GOP subcommittees, The policy statements, in abbreviated form: Agriculture - All possible help and encouragement should be given to self-help programs of producers; Ore gon State College should be given adequate money for ag ricultural research; State Ag County Residents Attend Meeting Four Jackson county resi dents attended the annual Oregon division meeting of the American Cancer Society earlier this month in Port land, the executive board of the Jackson county unit was told at their regular monthly meeting last week. Attending from this area were Dr. Robert M. Turner, Dr. Orval Eaton, Floyd East wood and Mrs. Jack James, They were among delegates from every county in the state. The . executive board was also Informed that Dr. Eaton was elected to a two-year term on the state board of directors and also elected to serve on the executive committee. Oth er directors on the state board serving from Jackson county are Mrs. John Day and Dr, Earl Lawson. Dr. Abner C. Clark told the local group that three educa tional films on cancer have been shown to numerous clubs and organizations here recent ly. He said it is the commit tee's aim to reach all clubs in the county this year with the life-saving facts about cancer through either films or speak ers. Mrs. E. A. Wentjarm, Med ford, and Mrs. O. L. Wright, Ashland, were named as film and program chairman respec tively. 'Aunt Jemima' to Be at Schools "Aunt Jemima," darling of the Quaker Oats company, will appear at five Medford schools when she arrives in town next week to highlight the Medford Lions club pan cake feed. On Thursday, Oct. 27, Aunt Jemima will appear at Jack son school at 1:15 p.m., and at Washington school at 2:30 p.m., according to assistant superintendent of schools El liott Bccken. On Friday she will make appearances at Hedrlck Junior High school at 9:45 a.m., at Roosevelt school at 10:30 a.m., and at McLoughlin Junior High school at 1:30 p.m. The pancake feed will be held Friday night from 5-8 p.m. at Hedrick. Aunt Jemima will entertain persons during the feed. Proceeds of the Lions club event will go to youth activities. Cal Smith Speaks At Local Meeting Cal Smith, of the Industrial Forestry association, present ed a talk on "the miracle of wood" at a recent Jackson Toastmasters club meeting. Smith pointed out that with out wood man would have a difficult time surviving in to day's society. "We are de pendent on wood for thou sands of products not readily identifiable as wood," Smith said. Smith mentioned baking yeast, alcohol, sugars, rayon fabric and cellulose as prod ucts derived from wood. "You can wear It, eat it, walk on it, live in it, and vote on it," Smith said. Howard Hopkins and Dore mus Scuddor, both of Med ford, also spoke at the meet ing. Young Republicans Meet at Hamlin Home Young Republicans of Jack son count met recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Hnmlin, Coleman Creek rd. Progress reports for the Re publican rally Saturday night on the courthouse lawn were given. Co-chairmen Lloyd Bishop and Gary Boshears made final announcements about the event. Economic Development and Progress - Hatfield's adminis tration was commended; the statement said total employ ment in Oregon reached a rec ord high last June and per sonal income last year was above the national average for the first time since 1953. Percentage gain or new cor porations in Oregon was high er than both California and Washington. Education-Calls for an in crease in basic school support with such increases reflected in lower county property taxes; recommends approval of ballot measure No. 6, state bonds for higher education federal aid to education should be restricted to current programs and to the support of construction programs for colleges and primary and sec ondary schools. Civil Right - Pledge "en thusiastic, sincere support of all measures which will give to all citizens the rights which are guaranteed in the const! tution of the United States." Taxation - No increase in taxes; savings in governmen tal operation through tight fiscal control and elimination of waste. Labor-Management - Rec ommends the rights of em ployees to choose union rep resentatives by secret ballot; encouragement of fair and equitable collective bargain ing with "necessary safe guards against the coercion" of individual employees by either management or labor: use of conciliation and medi ation. Unemployment Insurance- Continuation of present pro gram. Natural Resource s-En- dorses harvesting of timber on a sustained yield basis; work of the Oregon Water Resources Board in develop ing programs for use and con trol of streams should be ac celerated; early construction of the remaining authorized Willamette Basin projects urg ed; a study of underground water should be accelerated; freedom of the Salmon River from any obstruction until sate passage of salmon is pos sible; control of wastes is the responsibility of the individu al, municipality or industry involved. Workmen's Compensation- Establishment of a GOP per manent study committee; no recommendation at this time, Political Parties and Elec tion Laws-Leadership of both parties commended for spirit of cooperation which brought about formation of the bi-par tisan election laws study com mittee; pledge of "all possi ble legislative support to pro grams unanimously recom mended by committee mem bers; ballot measure No. 7 endorsed, to permit voters new in the state to waive the six month requirement in vot ing for president.
