In the 1050
legislature the
Democrats
held the bal
ance of power In both cham
bers, 10-11 in the Senate and
33-27 in the House. The Re
publicans gained in the House
last year while losing four
seats in the Senate.
One advantage for the Re
publicans is that the Demo
crats have more to lose in the
Senate this year. Of the 15
seats that are up, 12 are held
by Democrats and only three
by Republicans.
Two of these seats involve
non-contests. Both Sens. An-

these two-in Washington and
Josephine counties-and take

In the House, which elects
a new slate of 60 every two
years, anything could happen.
Peter Gunnar, Oregon Re
publican chairman, says the
GOP has an "excellent chance
to take the House," and he
adds, "We have a much better
chance than we've ever been
given credit for to break even
or take the Senate."
Robert Straub, Oregon Dem
ocratic chairman, is confident
of Democratic control in the
1961 legislature.
"We will increase our lead
in both houses," he says. "It
is completely unlikely that
the Republicans will win ei
ther house, and the wider
margin will be in the Senate."

Meany Points to 'Stagnation
Of Employment' in I

President George Meany says
the nation's total full-time
employment increased by only
700,000 workers during the
Elsenhower Administration.
Meany called the increase
a "stagnation of employment"
and said "this shocking trend
must be halted or it will un
dermine our entire society
and throttle the advance of
technology itself."
Meany blamed the "inade
quate rise" on radical tech
nological changes "in a period
of slowly rising sales and

Bannow discounted- fears

duce large-scale unemploy
ment. But he said labor could
"halt or seriously deter the
orderly process of technolog
ical change by appropriating
the benefits of automation."
Bannow and other indus
trialists said present tax laws
hamper the growth of .auto
mation and should be revised.

Looking of Girls
Brings Man Trouble
St. Petersburg, Fla.-It was
"looking at girls" that started
the trouble for Aaron Artson.
That's what Artson, 30, said
he was doing when he toads
an illegal turn and was -picked
up by a traffic policeman.
Police then discovered
while checking his records
that Artson had accumulated
14 traffic cltiations in tha
past two months.
