6 THURSDAY. OCTOBER 20. 1960 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. ORE. Fail u re of Economy To Boom Effects Corporate Executives By. HENRY J. BECHTOLD -UPI Financial Editor New York-fflPD-The failure of the economy to live up to Its "boom" expectations ap parently has had adverse effects on the corporate ex ecutive m a r- ket. , A survey by Executive Manpower Corp. showed there would Henry Beehuu be an average of 2.2 jobs per company pay ing from $10,000 to $75,000 during the coming six months, a slight drop from an aver age of 2.5 such jobs tabu " lated in an earlier survey this year, and well below the 3.5 executive job openings listed a year ago. But while there may be e w e r executive positions available, the increased com petition for business which our current standstill econ omy brings about has inten sified the- search for "top" executive talent. Pay Going Up This, in turn, means that anyone lucky enough to land an executive job the next six months most likely will get more money than he would have for the same job the past six months. The survey of 133 large firms averaging annual sales Chemical May Be Salvation of Teachers DetroitA chemical which 'taiay prove the salvation of grade school teachers through out the world is being studied by scientists here. ' Physicians at the Chil dren's Center of Metropolitan Detroit found that 31 or 40 children between the ages of 5 and 11 who had been al most hopelessly unruly calm ed down when given dextroamphetamine. Scientists called their fidgets "hyperkinetic impulse disorder." "There is evidence that up to 2 per cent of the school age population from 5 to 11 present this problem." said Dr. Hunter H. Comly, director of the Children's Center. of $113 million showed that a new high of 30.8 per cent of the positions will oay an impressive $20,000 a year or more, compared with 15.5 per cent in this category six months ago. And 9.6 ner cent of the openings will offer a handsome $30,000 or more, against 4.6 per cent last March. Of the close to 300 well- paid positions available, sales executives continued to be the most wanted, followed by manufacturing-production ex ecutives, and an oyerall group ing of general management administrative executives that also includes research executives. Executive Manpower presi dent William A. Hertan said that more than ever Industry seems to need manufacturing Visitation Program Resumed by Officials Ashland-Dr. O. W. Hascall, former registrar from the University of Colorado, and Dr. J. Paul Mather, former president of the University of Massachusetts, have re sumed their visitation pro gram after contacting South ern Oregon college officials relative to the American Col lege testing program of which Dr. Mather is now president. The American College Test ing program was organized in March, 1959, by a group of colleges who were interested in a multi-purpose program that would provide colleges with essential information about their entering students well before the beginning of orientation and registration according to Dr. Alvin Fel lers, director of student affairs. Powell to Speak at Roundtable Luncheon James O. Powell, Portland, president of the Rogue Val ley and Multnomah Data Pro cessing Centers, will speak Monday, Oct. 24, at the noon roundtable luncheon of the Medford Chamber ,of Com merce at the Jackson hotel Powell will speak on "Of fice , Automation for Small Business." The Rogue Valley center, Bill Meyer, manager, opened for business in Med- ford this fall. specialists to solve production problems, along with first rank research people. A significant finding was that the need for engineering executives fell sharply to fourth position from a solid second postion six months earlier. Engineers Needed Hertan noted that engi neers in the lower executive echelons are in less demand, whereas they were second "most wanted" last time and a year ago first. He said it would appear that the need for top engineering manage ment now is supplanting the mass need for engineers. The companies themselves expect the greatest place ment difficulties in engineer ing and sales, mainly because they all will be vying for the same high-level engineering and sales talent. For the first time, the sur vey showed, a majority of the positions would be re placements rather than new- ly created jobs, just about the reverse of the situation in the last poll. Favorite Method The favorite method of finding new executive talent continued to be from company ranks. Management recruit ing came next, followed by personal recommendation, ad vertising and employment agency. Hertan said the average of top management appears to be younger. Fewer companies in , the survey listed 55 as average age, and more firms listed 45 to 50 as average. A little more than half of the responding firms said they set a mandatory retirement age, a drop from the 62 per cent tallied six months ago Age 65 was the most favored retirement age.
