The Huskies will be out to stop Terry Baker, Oregon State's sophomore halfback. Wednesday's Husky drill was devoted to passing, but it wasn't all defense. Quarter backs Bob Hivner and Kermit Jorgensen spent a good part of the workout practicing their own throwing, indi cating the Husky Beaver clash may become primarily an aerial contest. Rogue River To Oppose IV Cougars Rogue River - Offense is getting stress this week as the Rogue River High Chief tains tune for a Rogue league scuffle with Illinois Valley. The game will be on Friday night at Cave Junction. Chief Coach Bob Sandgren has had his charges working on an important fundamental of offense, blocking, since the RR club was able to get only two first downs last week against Phoenix High. The passing game is getting attention. IV is expected to be fired up because of its homecoming festivities. But the Chiefs are hungry for victory, too. They haven't had a win lor more than a month. Sandgren said that RR came through the Phoenix game with no seniors being injured and that the players, with possible exception of Earl Bo wen, should be in fine shape for the game. Bowen, who has a bruised leg muscle, has averaged 15 tackles per game in the last three games. Possible starters for Rogue River' are Ron Lewis and Steve Simer, ends; Theron Stiehl and Gary West or Mai Lynch, tackles; Phil Archer and Jim Moorman or" Bowen, guards; Terry Gail, center; Frank Palmerton, quarter back; Jeff LeRoy and Ken Bailey, halfbacks, and Larry Wright, fullback. Schmeling, Louis Meet for 3rd Time New York -(UPD- The third Joe Louis - Max Schmeling fight was a draw. The two ring greats met by surprise in public Wednesday night for the first time since their historic battle at Yan kee stadium 22 years ago, when Louis flattened Schmel ing in the first round of their world heavyweight title fight to avenge an earlier defeat by the German. The occasion was a nation al television show "This is Your Life," which was taped in the ballroom of a midtown hotel for presentation this week end. "Joe Louis is a great f r 1 e n d," said Schmeling, burying all the hatred that accompanied their second fight. "He is one.of the finest sportsmen, in the world . . . and I wish good luck to him and his family." BACK IN BUSINESS Sacramento - IUPD - The embattled Sacramento Solon baseball team of the Pacific Coast league was back in busi ness today and the club's di rectors have until Nov. 15 to decide whether to call it quits or keep going next year. The nine directors voted unani mously Wednesday night to continue operation until mat date. They also announced that general manager Tommy Heath will direct a drive to sell 25,000 bonus ticket books at $10 each before Nov. 15. Phoenix and Glendale highs, both carrying the same team nickname, collide at 8 p.m. in a Rogue loop football scramble. Two weeks ago Phoenix beat Henley 13 to 7 and last week Henley walloped Glen dale 60 to 0. But, Phoenix is not thereby expecting an easy time with the Buccaneers of Douglas county. For Glendale will have its quarterback, Jack Berline back. He missed the Henley mix because of flu. Bumps and Bruises Phoenix has "a few guys with bumps, and bruises" but Coach Jack Woodward ex pects "everybody to be ready to go." For offense for Phoenix to open with it may be Bob Jacobs and Bob Dickinson or Gerald Sloper, ends; John Kerns and Harry Gay, tackles; Rick Richey and Rick Sey mour, guards; Terry Hansen, center; Sloper or Gary col fax, quarterback; Jerry Moore, left half; Dave John son or Othar Richey, right half," and Mike Consbruck fullback. Monty Combs, regular de fensive halfback, is expected to play a lot of offensive left half, where his ball carrying has shown much improve ment. Also ticketed for quite a bit of duty are Jerry John son, defensive end; Frank Thorpe- and Tom Oglesby, guards; Tim O'Mara, center; Ralph Gyson, tackle, and Rod ney Williams, freshman line backer. Oglesby is a sopho more transfer from Grants Pass where he played JV ball, Kasso Might Be Able To Play Corvallis -IUPD- Junior tail back Don Kasso, nursing a leg injury, may be able to alter nate with sophomore Terry Baker Saturday when Oregon State tangles with the univer sity of Washington in Portland. Coach Tommy Prothro and his staff voiced cautious op timism Wednesday about Kas so, who was injured against Indiana last week. Prothro put the Beavers through their third straight day of drills behind closed gates Wednes day. REMEMBER RED HAT DAYS KEEP OREGON GREEN Ashlanders Entertain Del Norte Ashland - Two men, who during their Southern Oregon college days played side by side four years in the Red Raider line, will direct teams from the opposite side of the field Friday night in a high school football conflict here. They are Bob Smith, men tor at Ashland high, and Tex Gatlin, tutor for Del Norte of Crescent City, . Calif. Smith was tackle and Gatlin an end for the Raiders. Smith this week has sought to instill more aggressiveness on defense into his Ashland Grizzly charges. Defensive work also has been aimed at stopping the Del Norte pass ing attack. On offense, the Grizzlies are seeking a more effective passing attack of their own. Bog Georgiana, a fullback alternate, has been installed at a split end in this cause. His downfield blocking also is helpful from the post. The Ashland coach blamed poor defense, along with three bad fumbles, much for last week's 20 to 12 loss to Grants Pass, which dropped an earlier tilt to Del Norte 7 to 0. . To begin with on offense Coach Smith may call on Jer ry Hauck and Georgiana, ends; Mike McCartney and Glen , Moses, tackles; Don Fowler and Ron Fuller, guards: Russ Blair, center; Jim Doster, quarterback; Bob Voris and Forrest farmer, halfbacks, and Ron Scholar, fullback. Rick Callahan and Jim Hamilton are to go into the lineup on defense, replac ing McCartney and Blair. Russia Expected To Offer Massive id To Cubans Washington (UPD U.S. offi cials expect Russia to offer massive new economic aid to Cuba. But how genuine this will turn out to be was con sidered an open question. And on it hinged another question how badly will the suspension Wednesday of most U.S. exports to Cuba damaged Castro's economic machine? Many State Department of ficials feel the Kremlin will be both unwilling and unable to provide quickly major aid to Cuba in consumer goods. One of the few commodi ties which Russia has in sur plus, and for which she has actively sought overseas mar kets, is oil and oil has been the bulk of Soviet exports to Cuba during the last . year. But the $141.1 million worth of U.S. exports to Cuba during the first half of 1960 included shoes, cigarettes, fabrics, radios, household ap pliances, cars, rubber, pacK- age foods, toys and all other items which make up a civi lian economy. Russia has been supplying almost none of these. Experts believe she could send such items to Cuba only by making the political decision to take them away from either So viet consumers, satellite countries or underdeveloped countries of Africa and Asia which, the Communists have been trying to woo. Propaganda Use Seen Many officials here think Soviet Premier Nikita Khru shchev wants to use Cuba for all the propaganda it's worth, but does not want to go to great expense over it. A dissenting view ex pressed by some government officials is that Russia will be more than eager to en gulf Cuba economically with resulting "sovietization" of the Cuban economy which might be hard to retrieve even if Castro is overthrown some day. The parade, which starts from the high school, will start at 2:30 p.m. Floats will form in the parking area at the school. Prizes will be awarded. The homecoming queen will be selected by members of the Phoenix High school foot ball team from four candi dates. They are Judy Deni son, freshman; Marcy Wil loughby, sophomore; Joyce Rutherford, junior; and Bev erly Johnson, senior. The queen will be crowned at -a dance in the high school gymnasium Friday night fol lowing the game. The dance is being sponsored by the Fu ture Farmers of America and the Future Homemakers. Los Angeles - (UPD - The pinch-hit hero of the 1959 World Series, Chuck Essegian, was sold to Spokane of the Pacific Coast league, and vet eran Irv Noren was given his release Wednesday by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Portland - IUPD - The Port land Beavers have sold out fielder Bill Causion to Salt Lake City and pitcher Dick Egan to Detroit, the same teams from whom Portland obtained the players last season.
