The OSC experlmr t, started in 1958 with the co operation of Corvallis cCy and the State Sanitary . i thorlty, was the first to :a tried in this type of climi. e. The experimental lagoon is 2.3 acres in size with vary ing depths up to three feet. It is constructed adjacent to the Corvallis sewage treat ment plant. Inexpensive to build and operate, the lagoons have found favor with small com munities and industries which, are unable to afford sewage treatment plants, OSC engi neers pointed out. However, larger communities are using them also where sufficient land is available. Reduction in Cost Reduction in sewage dis posal costs of from $10 to $20 per capita have been re ported. In charge of the OSC study are Fred J. Burgess and Mar tin Northcraft of the civil engineering department. They hav rfkpolvaH n npur ornnf of $8,900 from the National Institutes of Health to carry research on through 1961. During the coming year, emphasis will be on determin ing the waste load capacity of the lagoon; . operational prob lems and possibilities with various types of sewage and industrial wastes; best ways to achieve mosquito control; and growth of algae that is an essential part of the oxi dation process. Odors are not a problem unless the lagoon becomes overloaded. - Alarm Repeater Warns Families Of Attack Alert . A signal generator at the electric power plant would set off the alarms in earn. city with a 10-second surr a of accelerated electric power. The power plant would get the order to sound the alarm from Civil Defense. NEAR makes a penetrating sound, similar to an electrics alarm clock for 50 seconds, Is silent for 10 seconds and sounds again for SO seconds. Hoegh said Civil Defense would get the alert of an at tack within IS seconds from the military forces. The alarm could be set off in homes across the country within one minute.
