Distributed by Kin, F..tur ByndicW Small Anti-Tank Be Tested in 1961 .. London-(Science Service) Assessment trials of the Vig ilant, a new type of anti-tank .missile light enough to be carried by one man, are plan ned for early next year. Vig ilant (short for the full desig nation, visual guided infantry light anti-tank weapon) has 'been developed over the past 3'A years as a nongovernment iproject by Vickers - Arm strongs (Aircraft) Ltd. It is a wire-guided missile and has no control box or other aux iliary gear. ; The missile is launched from' its carrying box and guided by a hand-held sight ing device, It is claimed to be ready for instant use since no field assembly or testing is necessary. The total sys itcm weighs about 45 pounds and, in preliminary tests, it has been succesfully dropped with and operated by para troops. 3 Million : So far it has cost about $3 million to develop the mis sile. Vickor-Armstrong be came part of the British Air craft Corporation in the rec ent mergers affecting the British aircraft industry, and Eric Beverley of BAC said his company hoped to achieve mass, production of Vigilant at low cost, it could oe in service by mid-1081. Beverley said that the U.S. Government has shown "great interest" in the weapon. ;? Not only is Vigilant a handy Infantry weapon, but its small size and weight make it read ily adaptable for fitting to light reconnaissance and other fighting vehicles. ! Its special feature is its ac curate and easily operated control system. This solves tthe costly training problem normally necessary with small anti-tank guided weapons, The average soldier can learn to use it quickly, five hours ' of simulator training being normal. The easy-lo-learn con trol syetem Is based on a velocity control technique. lost Hunters Turn Up Safely By United Press International Two deer hunters reported lost, one of them a police chief, turned up safely lute Wednesday and early today in Western Oregon.
