OCTOBER 20. 1960 Science Students Outnumber Engineers at Oregon State Lorvams - xne great new emphasis on science in Amer ica ' is . reflected in Oregon Stale, college enrollments that put science ahead of engineer ing as trie largest school on campus for the first time in 28 years. . . Science has 1,528 students enrolled this fall and engi neering, 1.51J, Together, they make up nearly 40 per cent of the OSC student body; Sputnik is credited by Dean of Science F. A. Gilfillan for touching off the big national student rush to science. Sci ence enrollments at OSC have lumped 23 per cent in the last three years since Sputnik was launched. Will Not Pass Cifillan , hastened to add that the emphasis on science is not something that will "pass by" soon. More-not less -attention to science advances Is ahead for decades to come, he, believes, and tremendous new. careers have been open ed for trained graduates. Enrollment of women stu dents in science goes up slightly each year, he observ ed, but "not nearly fast enough considering oppor tunities for women in many science fields." Graduate school enrollment in science is climbing. About 400 of the 1,528 science students are working for master's or doc tor's degrees. The dean of engineering, George Gleeson, pointed out that engineering enrollments Plans Listed for Halloween Dance At Armory Here Plans are under way for a Halloween dance to be held Monday, Oct. 31, by the Moose lodge in cooperation with the city recreation de partment,' Medford public schools and St, Mary's school. The party, scheduled for the Medford Armory from 8 to 11 p.m., will be free. Ad mission will be the presenting o( a signed youth honor day card, through which .the stu dent pledges not to deface, mutilate or destroy property or perform any harmful act during the Halloween season. Recreation, department of ficials also announced a Hal loween window painting con test. The paintings will be judged by local artists for theme and originality with prizes to be presented the winners. Two Age Groupi Two age groups will be eligible to participate. Chil dren 11 years old and under and those 12 to 14. The students are to con tact the various downtown merchants to receive permis sion to paint the windows at the, store. Then they will re port to the city recreation de partment with their water colors. To participate they must also sign a youth honor card. The painting will start Wednesday, Oct. 26, it was reported, and must be com pleted by Saturday Oct. 20, at noon. . 1 It was announced that the grand prize for the painting contest will be a bicycle. Morton Cites Kennedy Stand Washington - UIPD - Sen. Thruston B. Morton, chair man of the Republican Na tional . committee, says that Sen. John F. Kennedy does not understand "the aims and methods of communism." Morton said the Democratic Presidential candidate demon strated this fact by advocat ing the return to Red China of the two off shore islands -Quemoy and Matsu. "This proposal," Morton said, "is reminiscent of the spirit of Yalta where it was believed that concessions to' the Soviet Union In Man churia would satisfy commu nists and save the rest of China from Communist dom ination." Morton's criticism of Ken nedy, was echoed in "Battle Line,'; the GOP's campaign news - letter. Battle Line said the recent second television debate "knocked the sawdust out of" Kennedy's argument that the balance of power is shift ing toward , the communists. The largest "unsatisfied de mand" in engineering is for graduates with advanced de grees, the OSC leader said. Eighty-four students are - in graduate engineering pro grams on campus this year, nearly half again as many as a year ago. -. Gleeson observed that engi- "hand ti?a neering and science go in hand"-engineering application of science. Tha two fields draw the same type student in general, too, ha noted.
