Medford Mayor Notes Importance of Forest Products to Region National Forest Products Week, Oct. 16 to 22, was giv en the official endorsement and support by Medford May or John W. Snider. The mayor encouraged lo cal participation in giving for mal recognition to this area's forest products industry. Mayor Snider said that ". . . as a major renewame re source, supported by the sci ence of modern forestry, wood offers the availability and abundance to satisfy the na tion's ever growing needs for many products - lumber, pa per, building materials, cnem icals, furniture and cloth - all dedicated to improving the lives of our people." ' Timber is the "mainspring of our Rogue Valley econo my," he said, "Any efforts we make In promoting ine greater use of lumber and oth er forest products will bene fit this area directly through continued e m p 1 o yment In woods and mill operations. During National Forest Products Week is a good time France Debates Nuclear Force Paris -UPB-The French Na tional Assembly today opened a marathon 25-hour debate on President Charles de Gaulle's controversial plan for an In dependent nuclear - striking force for France. The government, facing its first major test of strength with a rebellious parliament, was ' asking permission to spend approximately $2.4 bil lion during the next five years on equipping and mod- e r n 1 z 1 n g France's armed forces. About one-half of this was earmarked for a nuclear strik ing force equipped with French-built atomic bombers, rockets, nuclear bombs and warheads, rocket-firing war ships and submarines. The bill has been sharply assailed by the Communists, Socialists, parts of the Radi cals and Independents and by the extreme right, The only solid support has come from the Gaulllst Union for the New Republlca (UNR), which controls about one-third of the assembly's 470 seats. for all residents to advocate greater use of wood, not only from an economic standpoint but also on its own merits as a "beautiful, versatile and eco nomical building material," Mayor Snider said. It is fitting that, 352 years later, this nation should rec ognize the forests for the first time with an entire week -Oct. 16 to 22 - set aside as National Forest Products Week. Bob Nelson, Neeley-Nelson Lumber, company, is assistant chairman of the NFPW plan ning committee in southern Oregon. "This week we salute the forest industries which give us lumber and plywood for our homes, schools, churches, farms and other buildings; which give us pulp and paper and which give us a whole new world of chemicals and other wonderful products," he said. Southern Oregon will salute the thousands of residents whose 'livelihood depends up on the forests - the men who make ' lumber and plywood and the carpenters who use it. Portland-niPB-Ted Kennedy, youngest brother of Demo cratic presidential nominee, John F. Kennedy, said Mon day the present Republican administration lacks Imagina tion and this has resulted in deterioration of this country's international position. Kennedy told a Portland State College audience "We have failed to see any imagin ation, any new ideas, any new concepts in foreign policy in the last eight years. Instead we have seen vacillation in Republican policy resulting in deterioration of our inter national position." He cited Vice President Richard M. Nixon's trip to Venezuela and; President Ei senhower's called-off trip to Japan and said Republican mishandling of . aid to these countries obviously had not created the good will for the United States it should have. Kennedy also cited what he called lack of progress in ag riculture, the military estab lishment, social security, and aid to education. . , Inquest Scheduled In Portland Fire Portland (UPB The district attorney's office said Monday a coroner's inquest might be held into the house fire here Oct. 7 which claimed the lives of four persons. Fire investigators indicated the blaze was of incendiary origin. Killed in the fire were three daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. Garrett, age 5 months to 3 years, and Pa tricia Mae Gravatt, 21.
