BECHTOLD UPI Financial Editor ' New York - (UPD - Like the United States, our northern neighbor Canada has failed to see its econ omy thiS year touch off the spark that was to ignite t h e "soaring sixties." Following a not ably up swing in 1959, C a n a d 1 a n Henry Bechtold business slow ed down to a walk in the first eight months of I960. With the growing impact of ample world productive capa city and intensified competi' tion, combined with the mo derating influence of mone tary restraint, North Ameri can demands for industrial materials and for hew plant and equipment have not swelled in the- way many people anticipated, according to the Bank, of Nova Scotia. Attention has been concen trated on the more economic handling of inventories rather than on building ' them up; capital investment programs have been maintained but not expanded; and commodity prices in general have been under downward pressure rather than upward. And along with these real developments, the bank point ed out, the talk bf inevitable inflation, which was so promi nent last year, has now great ly subsided. ''. v Slim Production Riia Canadian production in the first half of this year ran about 3 per cent ahead of the comparable 1959 period, but the bank said most of this ad vance had been achieved be fore the start of the year. After allowing for seasonal variations, the volume of in dustrial outputs at mid-year was somewhat lower than at the turn of the year, it added. The employment trend has managed to point upwards slightly, mainly because of the persistent increase in ac tivity in many service indus tries..', n ;-: . The strongest expansive in fluence on the Canadian econ omy this year has been the upturn in European business which developed around the middle of 1959 and had risen to boom proportions in the early months of 1960. The increase in European demands, together with a notable reduction in trade restrictions there and in sev- e r a 1 Commonwealth coun tries, has enlarged the over seas flow of many Canadian goods, particularly manufac tured items'. However, the bank noted, a decline in overseas purchases of wheat and other farm prod ucts has offset some of the gain in non-agricultural ship ments. .; Decline In Exports . Tufts of ' feathers resemble those of a Satanic majesty, and being two colored, they are "pied." So we arrive easily at the name "pied billed grebe." All the grebes are queer. To watch the so-called "hell diver" for only a few minutes is to' acquire a new respect for the swimming and. diving abilities of this aquatic bird. The grebe is actually more fish than fowl, as It spends its entire life in the water, Even the nest is a floating structure of rotting vegetation, prevent ed from drifting away by be ing tied to the water plants among which it is always placed. " " Adapted For Water Life Its legs are especially de signed for life in the water by being placed far back on the body.'. About all the bird could do on land would be to slide along on its stomach, like a man pushing a wheel barrow without the wheel. Usually, the only way to find the grebe's nest is to actually see it leave the nest, mark its location carefully, arid go directly to it. As soon as the female grebe leaves her nest she piles plants and nest ing material on the eggs or young. When it is carefully hidden, she dives underwater, swims some distance and comes to the surface. Her ability to re main underwater is only du plicated by the cormorant. Perhaps some of this bird's other names were given it by people who were impressed by its underwater perform ance, for in some sections it is called "water - witch" and "dipper." The pied-billed grebe is not a handsome bird. The upper parts are a brownish - black, shading into a lighter brown on the stomach. The bill is short and thick. The princi pal food consists of water in sects, leeches and an occasion al frog or small fish. The grebes are related ; to the loons. Scientists place these birds close to the reptiles. The mo tions of the neck . are even snake-like, and the method of trying to walk on land is more of a crawl than a walk. Fast Moving Small boys with rifles waste plenty of ammunition trying to hit these fast moving birds; the bird's quickness in diving beneath the water makes it a difficult target. It is a strange bird and there are many pages of its life history, that have never been written. . To hear the uncanny series of peculiar and unearthly cries uttered by the grebe makes the listener realize and wonder if there really is justi fication for the name "hell diver," for the bird actually does seem to have the phe nomenal ability to dive into the terrible depths of the un known region below.
