I960 e 8 B Eisenhower Meets African Leaders Washington - (UPB - Presi dent Eisenhower said Friday in an obvious jab at Nikita Khrushchev that the United States must never let threats and provocations interfere with efforts to seek friend ships with Asian and African nations. The Chief Executive made the statement in the wake of a meeting at which he extend ed the hand of friendship to representatives of 16 newly independent nations recently admitted to the United Nations-Cyprus and 15 African countries. Eisenhower appealed to the . African leaders at the White House session to resist Com munist attempts to subvert or dominate their nations. Cottage Grove Boys Injured in Collision Cottage Grove (UPB T w o Cottage Grove teen agers were seriously injured Thurs day night in a car-train crash at the Harvey Road railroad crossing here. Injured were Guy West, 16, driver of the car, and Ed ward Peabody, also 16, a pas senger. They were injure 1 when the car in which they were riding collided with a freight train. Watkins k; Hi -i k v vi ivm i mil r wwi k i wjrm r IM This Exodus Has ' Never Been Explained It was one of those sudden summer storms that seeming ly comes from nowhere. The sun was shining brightly, then it wasn't; a dark cloud form ed overhead. The hoiteewife whipped her clothes off the line and start ed for the house, one eye on the black clouds tumbling overhead. Half way to the back porch her attention was suddenly at tracted by a movement in the grass ahead of her. A little frightened, she stopped. Mov ing at right angles to her own direction was a crowd of tiny creatures scurrying h e 1 1 e r skelter through the grass. It was a minute or so before she recognized what they were; when she did she could hard ly believe her eyes. What ap peared to be several dozen chameleons were scampering over the lawn Tumbled Along ' . While she stood there, trans fixed by the mass movement of little reptiles, some of them, on the outer edge of the mov ing throng, crawled across her feet. Some actually were . tumbling over one another in their mad haste. Realizing she was witnessing something strangely unusual, she began noticing individual chamel eons in the hurrying horde. There were large, full- grown ones, m e d 1 u m-sized ones, and many not over an inch in length. There were some that were dark colored, some leaf-green, and some even with oddly colored tails, Indicating that at some unfor ' tunate time the little creature had lost its tail and had grown a new one. It took several minutes be fore the last of the group scam pered past and disappeared into a flower bed at the far side of the garden. Then the back yard was bare of move ment; the last little scamper ing reptile had gone. Holding tightly to the flut tering clothes, the lady re- ' entered the house just as the rain began pattering on the roof. With the rain came the stronger gusts of the wind The lady, now safe inside, wondered about the fleeing chameleons. Others that have heard about it wonder, too The reason so many of them : were moving together, and all in the same direction, all re sponding to the same impulse ; is difficult to understand. The obvious reason would seem to be "migration" or an organiz ed exodus to some supposed , place of safety, either to avoid the storm or because the pros sure of numbers made a trip necessary. Do Not Migrate But- chameleons do not nat urally migrate, so the very obvious reasons are not neces sarily the real cause. Even if they were frightened by the impending storm, just how did so many of them get together? How or why did they decide to move toward the same des tination? It is unusual, even where these tiny reptiles are common, to see more than , two or three in any one loca tion. So, once again, we have a true but strange situation; a "thundering herd" is some times a silent exodus of little creatures rushing toward some destiny about which we can . only guess. ; (Released by The Register and !
