Williams re. marked .that Allen lacks ex perience at the post but has been showing well and in. spires the confidence of his teammates. The Pels also have the run ning of Larry McClure, Dave SUpplch and Greg Jones, the passing and running of Gary Bucchholz and pass catching of Allen Phillips, Roger Bal lard, Jones and others. Plan Platoons Both Medford Coach. Fred Spiegelberg and Pel mentor Wiliams have announced in tentions to platoon with sep arate units for defense. Spie gelberg has said he intends to field a starting defensive club with entirely different person nel from the' crew he'll use on offense. Lineman Gary Han cock (215) reportedly is the only player Williams plans to use both ways. " ' Williams told the Klamath Falls Herald and News: "We will go with our best offensive unit and spell them with our best defensive group so that we can stay as fresh as possi ble against that Medford depth. If we get tired, we are in trouble. Said the H and N; "If there is any weakness in the Med ford armor, it must show in the defense , . . Hunsaker has 16 pass comple tions in 44 heaves for 301 yards. Allen has hit receivers on two of nine throws for 58 yards. Phillips, 5-141, and Ballard, 5-80, have been the main receivers. Rogue River Trip Slated By Phoenix Phoenix - Three players who missed action last week will be on hand tonight when Phoenix high football Pirates go tho Rogue River for their third Rogue league scuffle and try for their third victory of the season in the circuit. The three are Bill Qavis and Dave Johnson, who have had knee injuries and Bob Jacobs who was on a trip Coach Jack Woodward said that Johnson will be a start ing defensive linebacker and could open at wingback on offense. Davis, sidelined for three weeks, likely will see some duty at defensive half back. Jacobs is a probable starter at end. He entered the hos pital Wednesday after a rou tine doctor's examination. Fox, in his fourth year as grid coach at North Salem,' was re ported in satisfactory condition. Medford's Hi Martin fin ished first over the 1.8 miles route with a 10:08 time. Second and third, respect ively were Farley Buell and Tom Hudson, Ashland. Dennis Brumbach, Medford, was fourth and Bill Dahlstrom, Medford, fifth. Gordon Self took sixth for Ashland and Gary Wallace seventh. Med ford's Allan Zieman was eighth and Bill Lawrence took ninth for Ashland. Dan Lewis, Ashland, ran in 10th position but points for that spot went to Craig Miller, Medford. Only the first five finish ers for each school counted in the scoring. GP, Ashland In Scuffle Grants Pass - Grants Pass and Ashland High schools each seeking to retain an un blemished mark in Southern Oregon conference' football collide here this evening. The conflict is considered a toss-up on the strength of records against common foes. Ashland beat Klamath Falls 20 to 12 and GP topping that club 19 to 6. Both were vic tims of Roseburg, Ashland losing 20 to 13 and Grants Pass 28 to 6. The respective brushes with Ducks Aim To Bust Jinx of Alumni Day United Press International Oregon will try to crack a homecoming jinx against Washington State Saturday at Eugene while Oregon State is expected to defeat Idaho at Moscow despite injuries to some key players. Oregon hasn't won a home coming game in four years and the Webfoots are running up against old alumni -day spoiler in the Cougars, who sport the nation's top pass catcher and also one of the country's better all - around halfbacks in Keith Lincoln. - Hugh Campbell, the sur prising sophomore, leads the nation in passes caught, yards gained and touchdowns. In all he has caught 26 passes for 398 yards and 5 TDs. The Mel Melin-Campbell combina tion, plus Lincoln, is expect ed to give Oregon's defense a real test.
