"Bell lnc the. cat" has been fre- quently proposed as a positive method of saving countless song-birds. The idea is that the bell warns the bird that Its enemy is approaching. Cats are naturally preda tors and the bell idea has jocn tried in many localities. In fact, fn some areas it has become a law. On the lace of "It; it -.would seem to be a good. idea. : " The skulking cat sneaking Up on the unsuspecting bird . . would be ringing the tiny bell at every step. In theory the bird would hear the sound long , before the animal was close .enough to strike; every , movement of the pliant am mal muscles would twitch the bell enough . to cause it to ; give forth a sound. , Frustrated Cat : ' With bells on all the cats, the bird-lovers would be sat- lsfied, the cat-owners would be complying with the other's wishes and the 'birds would be safe. The cat herself would be frustrated; might become slightly neurotic; might even become so discouraged that she would be content to re main always indoors and eat only what she was supposed to eat. - But facts do not always coincide or even ' partially agree with theory. Especially is this true when we are deal ing with living . things that have the ability of reasoning things out for themselves. Nickel From Cuba Claimed Inferior To Other Sources 'Washington (Science Serv ice) In closing its $110 mil lion nickel plant at Nicaro, Cuba, the U.S. is closing off a' major source of Nickel but an inferior one. The U.S. has announced it is ending production at Nicaro because of "confiscatory taxes and ha rassment by the Cuban Gov ernment. In recent years the U.S has Imported more than 20, 000 tons of oxide powder and sinter (cinder-like material) from; Nicaro. In the same years, Imports from all coun tries tainted about 30,000 tons of oxide powder and sinter ' plus between 60,000 and 100,. 000 tons of pure nickel, More Imiuritiei ?The powder and sinter carne from Cuba and Canada The pure metal came from five European countries and Japan. The nickel powder and sinter produced by the Nicaro plant had more hn purities than has the Cana dian. 1 -i " . , : When there was a big de. mand for nickel, buyers ac- ectped the Cuban nickel gladly, but during 1958 an oversupply of nickel de veloped Buyers began to look for higher grade material. A research program was direct ed towards improving and di vertifying the Nicaro prod ucts, but Increased activity of the Cuban revoltion in the Nicaro Tea in the last part of 195. inded the research. ' ' The . ajor use for nickel, 'exclush'a of scrap nickel, in the U.S. has been for stainless itccls, ' The inventor or the me chanic always knows exactly what a machine will do, but trylng'to foretell what an an imal will do under differing circumstances or under un usual conditions is something else again. By the end , of a few days It has learned how to walk without the silly bell making the slightest sound. , The only chance the bell has of ringing is In the final. sudden pounce, ' and by that time it is too late to warn the bird. Contrary to what the advocates of. the bell Idea hope for, the "belled cat" will save very few song birds. The Idea of "bell ne the cat" is about as full of loop holes as a weather forecast. (Released by The Register and Tribune Syndicate, 1960) YMCA Id Offer Classes in Crafts , The Young Men's Christian association of Mcdford is en rolling students now Into the Saturday craft ' classes that will start Nov. 5. Classes will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. eacn Saturday in the craft shop located In upstairs of the YMCA. According to Bruce Burns. youth director at the YMCA, the classes will be held to only 10 per class, and one hour in length. Morning classes will be for boys and girls will meet In the afternoon. Different types of crafts will be offered In the class, from woodworking to leather work and craft striping. A small fee will be charged lor -some of the Items, but most of the ma- tonal will be used free of charge. The program will bo set up In such a way that boys or girls may take the classes along with the present swim ming and gym classes already offered for youth on Saturday.
