Leaky Tiki, Crew Sighted in Ocean Eureka, Calif. -(UPD- A raft named Leaky Tiki and three Washington state men intent on sailing it to Australia were sighted off Cape Mendocino in Northern California Wed nesday, according to ; the Coast Guard. . ., The adventurers were iden tified as Charles Aylen, 36; Donald Trawitzki, 35, and Jerry Ball, 26, all of Puyallup.' The Leaky Tiki consists of two 24-foot pontoons decked over and carrying a cabin. ,It is equipped with a mast and sail, plus an outboard motor. The Coast Guard said the men had enough food to last; for nearly three months - and planned to drift and sail across, the Pacific. T. Lonseth said the performance of new fresh men in the mathematics ex aminations this fall was "sig nificantly better than ever be fore and speaks highly - for the . work of most high schools;" The placement tests are given new fresl men to help- determine for which classes they are best prepared. More than twice as many students qualified for advanc ed placement this fall: in cal culus and analytic geometry as a year ago, according to Dr. Albert R. Poole, profes sor of mathematics in charge of .the tests. The upper scores on the tests were from 8 to 10 points higher than last year and enrollment in rem edial courses for students who need special help in math is going down sharply. Increased Students Poole also pointed to the increased numbers of women students in the ranks of the high scorers. One coed had a perfect score on the advanced algebra test -. a feat matched by only one man among the new freshmen. Coeds are encouraged to1 consider mathematics . as a major field of study, he add ed' because career opportuni ties are excellent for them in such fields as teaching and computer work. Many coeds are "scared out" of mathemat ics, he lamented, when the. truth is that they' can do just as well as the men. The number of mathemat ics, majors at OSC has shot up in the past five years, Lon seth noted. In 1955, OSC had two students majoring in mathematics. This year, there are 137 plus nearly 60 stu dents working for master's and doctor's degrees. ' Teacher institutes sponsor ed by the National Science Foundation ' are contributing in great measure to the rapid upgrading of m a t h e matics training across the country Lonseth believes. OSC, for example, has con ducted mathematics institutes for junior and senior high school teachers the past two summers, is offering an in service institute on an; eve ning commuter basis this year, and has given academic year institutes for science math teachers each of the past four years. All have been sup ported by : National Science Foundation grants. Sputnik helped focus the attention of the world on mathematics and science, the OSC mathematicians said, and giant electronic comput ers have, helped open vast new fields of mathematics. Today, mathematicians are in great demand by industry, research agencies, the gov ernment, military services and schools. The future looks even brighter, Lonseth em phasized.
