Nunn told the group Ore gon should be proud of its welfare program. "I think we can improve the public image . . ." he said. William L. Mitchell, com missioner of Social Security, was a visitor to the confer ence. He said so far only a few states have signified in tentions to take advantage of the medicare program passed by Congress to provide help to old persons with severe medical burdens. ORE, O O Alaska Freezer Tax on Docket Washington - OJPII - The U.S. Supreme Court Monday agreed to hear an appeal by Alaska for reinstatement of its tax on freezer ships which preserve salmon waiting trans portation to canneries in the Puget Sound region. The court will schedule arguments soon and then will follow with a written opinion. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in a decision last March threw out the tax as an invasion of interstate com merce. The four per cent levy is part of a pattern begun by the Territory of Alaska in 1949 to tax all fish processors operating in Alaska waters. Most freezer ship operations are carried on in Bristol Bay. The freezer ships usually an chor seaward of the three mile limit and send in catcher boats to do the actual fishing. Red Bluff Man Has 100th Birthday San Francisco- IUPD -James Haughy celebrated his 100th birthday Monday but he plans to be back to work at his machine shop next week. Haughy closed his shop in Red Bluff, Calif., last Friday and came to San Francisco for a week-long celebration with friends and relatives. He has lived alone since his wife, Ada, died eight years ago at the age of 85. Haughy, who was born in Ireland, came to this country in 1869. He has two living children, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. . His formula for a long and happy life is "a lot of living and loving."
