Watkins Chicken-raisers Have Fly-Killers in Barnyard It's funny it took us so long to be sure or to find out what some old-time chicken raisers knew many years ago. Pos sibly the old-timer never put the proverbial two and two together, but the results were satisfactory so he continued the practice, without know ing the value of the experi ment. Neither did the old-timer apparently know that the the male chicks' were the ones that ate most, or all of the fly larvae. Since then there has been a' lapse of many' years during which time tons of poison spray .have . been sprayed on and around chick en yards. Spray was expensive, as well as. posing a certain amount of danger, both to chickens and to humans. Less effective were 'fly paper, elec tric flytraps and various other "de-buggers." Unfortunately, around a henyard, even a modern one, there are condi tions conductive to the breed ing and prevalence of flies. Cause Discomfort Besides being germ-carriers, the flies cause no end of dis comfort to a laying hen. She just can't do her best at egg production'- when she has a hundred or so- flies buzzing around her head. The egg-producer, of course, is the hen herself, hut the man who owns her is tremendously in terested in the number ol eggs she lays. The expenditure of large amounts of money for chem ical or mechanical bug con trol, let alone the labor in volved, caused the poultry raiser to desire a better and cheaper method of bug con trol. Then someone noticed that where the were numbers of baby chicks the fly population was noticeably less. Closer observation revealed the start ling fact that the baby chicks were busy eating something, always present near the hen- yards, and that something turned out to be fly-larvae and fly-pupae. Better Than Insecticide ' Here, in the form of a baby chick, was an effective fly destroyer that worked con stantly, and was safer than any insecticide. Further stud ies revealed the fact that male chicks were' more active', and had a greater appetite for the larvae than the female chicks. Here was an added bo nus, -for male chicks, being less productive than female chicks, could be bought from the hatchery for a little or nothing. So, the cycle has almost completed a full turn. Here in this enlightened age sud denly we discover what a few old-timers did a half century ago - that a group of male chicks would destroy more fly larvae and pupae cheaper and quicker than all the poison sprays and mists. Peculiar, that so many things work so effectively and satisfactorily. (Released by The Register and Tribune Syndicate, ISbU) NEWSPAPER MAN KILLED Sarasota. Fla. -0IPU- Arthur J.
