o O MEDFORD MAIL TRIBlSiE. MEDFORD. ORE. THURSDAY. OCTOBER 6, I960 Ancient Silver Cup Located in Cyprus Puzzles Scientists London - (Science Service) j - The restoration of a cor : rosion encrusted silver cup made with pride by some un 5 known silversmith over 3,000 ', years ago raised a problem I which is puzzling scientists. ' The cup was buried in the j ground of Enkomi in the is I land of Cyprus, where it lay hidden until modern times. i The problem concerns the J decoration on the cup. As a , result of laboratory work, the i decoration was first reported 1 to be an inlay of a substance ! called niello. Niello is a mix- ture of the sulfides of silver j and copper and is the basis of ;jewelry which has been made "for many hundreds of years 1 by a very tricky process hand- ed down from father to son ? in Siam (Thailand) and other " parts of southeast Asia. The Enkomi cv.p is dated at 1,400 B.C. If the niello decora Vtion was used in Cyprus at I that early date, it is a dis ! covery of great importance to ' archaeologists. I But Drs. G. R. Claringbull i and A. A. Moss of the depart ment of mineralogy of -the British Museum here report J they believe that the evidence I suggesting the decora tion. might be niello is not con ' elusive. They consider the evi i dence is that the Enkomi cup was inlaid with copper. t When first' excavated, the cup was covered with green i corrosive products. Prelimi nary examination showed the presence of gold and a black nnwriprv etihstance. When the black powder was analyzed spectrograpnicauy, tne resuus indicated that it might be niello. The next problem was how to remove the corrosion ilfo nf crime three'thousand years in the ground without Jocfrnuind pithpr the Sold Or the niello. Laboratory experi ments with niello showed inai it would resist being soaked in hot formic acia. ine noi acid was therefore used to wash off the incrustation. Be- nnqiVi nritfinal decor ation was revealed in a sur prisingly fresh condition. Feeling Explained rw HarniH J. Plenderleith of the International Centre for the study of the Preserva tion and Restoration of Cul tural Property in Rome ex plains why he feels the En komi cup was decorated in niello: The perfection of line and luster survived immers ion for 20 minutes in com mercial formic acid at boiling temperature without any sign of loss. The black patterns were "lustrous or splendent and enamel-like" and, where iinriaTnacpH hv time and the soil, the material formed a perfect tracery ot sntny jei black .mass-and-line ornament in the bright silver ground work. -v The Family Council Fdltrir'i Note: The Family Council consists oft' Judge, a psychlj- E?Jt".,.ri .Hit and a women's editor.
