Crater Light Bulb Sale Is Planned The annual Crater Lions club light bulb sale will be held Monday and Tuesday nights next week, the club has announced. Proceeds trom the sale will be used locally to aid the blind,or persons with sight problems who cannot finance prooer care or equipment, the c, said. Members ot the club will make a house-to-house, tour between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. each day. A sack of eight light bulbs costs $2. The bulbs are of various sizes, ' the club noted. Medford residents have been irged to turn on porch lights both nights. Colonel Dow Retires From Military Service Lt. Col. Howard B. Dow, son of Mrs. Nettie Furch, route 1, Talent, retired last month from the U. S, Army after more than 20 years service. At his retirement, Colonel Dow was assigned to Fitz simons General hospital, Den ver, Colo. He was awarded his first oak leaf cluster for his Army commendation medal and was cited for his work as coordinating officer of the reserve training pro gram and administrative abil ity in formulating an emer gency operation plan for the hospital. Vehicles Collide - Vehicles operated by David Laurance Espey, 20, of 619 Park st., and Patricia Valeighia Den man, 33, of 166 Gibbon rd., Central Point, collided Mon day about 11:55 a.m. on Ninth st., between Front st. and Central ave., according to city police. Both vehicles were heavily damaged and were towed from the scene of the accident. There were no re ported injuries, and n6 cita tions were issued. " Dance Planned - The Mus cular Dystrophy association will hold a benefit dance at the Medford Moose lodge starling at 9:30 p.m. Satur day. Proceeds from the dance will go toward purchasing a chair for a Phoenix High school student. Water Squirted - Vandals unloosed a fire hose on the second floor of the Leverette building, Grape and Main sts., Monday between 5:30 and 6:55 p.m., and squirted water into a number of second floor offices and the hallway, ac cording to city police. No estimate of damage, if any, was given, but it was be lieved to be minor, according to a tenant of the building. Mopping Up - Patrolmen of the state department of for estry were mopping up today on a one-half acre fire along the railroad tracks south of Ashland. They said that the blaze in grass, brush and old sawdust was started from a transient's fire. Three tank trucks and a tractor were being used on the site today to extinguish the fire in saw dust. Pipe Plugged - Firemen, called in to investigate a re port of smoke in the Wendell Hayes residence, 2566 How ard ave., found the smoke pipe of the wood heater plug ged with soot. In Hospital - Sam Morse, 216 West Main St., Medford, and Mrs. Robert Hogue, box 132, Kenyon, Calif., were list ed as medical patients today at Sacred Heart hospital. Surgery patients there in cluded Mrs. Mabel Cooper, box 51, Klamath, Calif.; J. D. Burton, 125 Bush St., Central Point; and Mrs. Geraldine Cramer, 626 Butte st., Yreka, Calif. Warehouse Damaged-Minor damage to warehouse and a shed back of the YMCA re sulted from fire about 5:10 p.m. yesterday. Firemen said that a trash fire had been started by "unknown parties." The warehouse and shed are owned by Harry Rubenstein, Portland. Japanese Royalty Visiting in Seattle Seattle-IUPl) - Crown Prince Akihito of Japan and his pretty wife, Princess Michiko, were to view something that looked more like home than the United States today before departing for Portland, Ore., the last city they will visit on their United States tour. Their itinerary called for a morning visit at the Japanese Tea Garden in the arborteum of the University of Washing ton. A group of 40 Japanese- American Boy Scouts from Seattle composni an orches tra to play the national an thems of the United States and Japan for the royal cou ple. The couple was due in Port land at 3:45 p.m. Highlight of their visit to the Oregon metropolis was an evening banquet at the Sheraton Ho tel at which more than tsuu persons, including Gov. and Mrs. Mark Hatfield, were ex pected. State Institution ' Budgets Approved Salem-(UPI)-The State Board of Control today approved a 1961-63 operating budget for the state's 12 institutions of $46,055,155. This is more than $4 million over the current biennium. Debits for August, 1960. to taled $100,893,827, for July, 1960, the total was $96,310,- 452; and for August, 1959, the total was $98,165,876. Oregon, with 191 banks re porting, had an increase in bank debits in August of 6.5 per cent compared to July, and a 7 per cent increase over August, 1959. Bank debits represent the dollar value of checks drawn against the deposit accounts of individuals and business firms. Gregory, candidate for state representative from Jackson county, said at a meeting of the electrical workers union here this week that "labor must be on guard against its enemies by sup porting the legislative candi dates who believe in the labor movement." Gregory added that there had been little labor legisla tion in Oregon, and that most of the legislation was anti- labor in nature. There may be more at tempts to pass restrictive leg islation, Gregory said, because of the success of the Land- rum-Griffin bill in Congress last year which will be con sidered by some members to be indication of public opin ion. Gregory also said that there was a need for study of leg islation requiring compulsory arbitration to settle labor dir putes after a strike has ex tended over an unreasonable period of time. STOP! The cooperative trips are held annually to acquaint members of one agency with the work being done by the other in the field of wildlife management. Close working relations must be maintained since it is the responsibility of the forest service to admin ister wildlife habitat as a function of multiple-use man agement, and the state game commission to manage the fish and game resource. The trip started at the Cen tral Point screen shop where the fabrication of fish screens is done. The group observed the use of several types of fish screens on the Rogue river at the Savage Rapids dam, Gold Ray dam, and the Gold Hill Irrigation ditch. Open Discussion Lunch was eaten at Tou- Velle State park where an open discussion of fisheries and fish habitat management was held. After viewing the Shady Cove public launching ramp, the group moved on to the Rogue Elk spawning ground where they observed Chinook salmon spawning, and had a discussion on the biology, life Obituaries M.
