By Ruth Dixon Here is a scary-looking fish that is good to eat and great sport for fishermen. Why? Because he is a game fighter and will try almost any kind of bait. This fellow wears attractive whiskers, which are fine feelers, and has a square-cut tail and no scales. Some of his cousins in South America have bony plates, hough, and some small cousins have poisonous spurs. You can catch these fish in the Great Lakes and in such rivers as the Mississippi. Their nests, built in sheltered spots, are watched over until the young are old enough to look after themselves. Some members of this family weigh just a few pounds. The props are two strong chairs or boxes and half as many brown paper bags as there are players. Place the chairs about 25 feet from the starting line. Divide the players into two teams and each team into pairs horse and driver. At the starting signal, the first horse in each team puts on his bag, and his driver directs him by voice only (he cannot touch him with his hands) to his team's chair. The horse sits on the chair, takes off the bag, and gives it to the driver, who then becomes the horse, and they race back to the starting point. The next pair then takes over. The team that finishes first wins. Fun can be added by drawing horses' heads on the bags. If the play ers wish, there can be a second race with the horses walking backward to the goal.
