Curtis Nesheim, southwest district warden of the state department of forestry, and Robert Torhcim, fire control officer for the Rogue River National forest, said the new policy has been put into ef fect to insure the safe burn ing of logging debris and thereby prevent unnecessary damage to forest lands. , Torheim said the policy will apply on private land within the national forest. The state de partment of forestry will then indicate what the operator will need in manpower and equipment to safely burn the particular area in question. A state man will be assign ed to meet the operator at the slash area at an appointed time for burning. The forest warden will issue the permit, provided the operator has the required men and equipment on the Job, and the weather is right. All terms of the burning permits must be adhered to at all times, Nesheim noted, and these terms will be ex plained to the operator at the time the permit is issued. Nesheim said anyone burn ing without a permit, or vio lating any of the provisions of the permit, will be cited to appear in court. The district warden said that in the past "most of our trouble with escaped slash fires has been due to the fires being left unattended. Con tinuous and adequate patrol must be maintained to insure that the fire will not escape the area that has been pre pared for burning." Five Valley People Get Homesife Leases Four Medford residents and one Ashland woman have been awarded leases to five recreational homesites at Hy att lake by the Medford dis trict of the bureau of land management. Successful applicants are qatewood G. Smith, Duane O. Richardson, William G. Ardry and Charles R. Mortimer. Medford; and Mrs. Helen F. Lewis, Ashland. Lessees were determined by a drawing at Portland, and will be required to construct cottages during the first five years of their 14-yoar leases. All 18 small tracts at the lake are now under lease, and . no other BLM lands in the Medford district have been classified as small tracts avail able for lease, according to the bureau.
